BBC journalist who went undercover to expose lecturers begins receiving death threats

Kiki Mordi, the BBC journalist who went undercover to expose university lecturers guilty of sex for grades, has started receiving death threats from people angry about the exposé.

Kiki, who said she was herself a victim of sexual harassment in the university and didn't graduate, said on Monday that the project was inspired by her personal story.

She revealed that she has begun receiving threats following the investigation, which saw her and other undercover female journalists secretly filming randy lecturers in Unilag and University of Ghana as they used their positions to demand sex from young ladies in order to favour them academically. However, she added that she is not bothered by those threats because the BBC takes the security of employees very seriously.

She told Sahara Reporters: "I have received subtle threats since this work was completed but I am not bothered because the BBC takes the security of employees seriously.

"Before embarking on this project, the team prayed a lot and also sang because it helped to calm the nerves.

"But I had to go through the trainings I received over and over again because I wanted to get it right.

"The bulk of the ritual I performed were reading, research and preparation.

"The biggest goal of this work was to be louder than the aggressor because sexual harassment is very loud. I wanted it to be silenced.

"I am happy that a lot is changing already since the documentary was release and I can confirm to you that one of the lecturers at the University of Lagos caught sexually harassing a prospective student has been dismissed by the institution.

"I believe it doesn’t stop there until there is a conviction. We have to break that culture of impunity."

UNN lecturer and Pastor reverses claim of #sexforgrade documentary being doctored after backlash

University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) lecturer and Pastor Joseph Nnaemeka Chukwuma has recanted his claim of BBC's #sexforgrade documentary being doctored following the backlash that ensued after his Facebook post went viral.

In a rejoinder post he shared, the clergyman said he drew his inference from an abridged version of the documentary. He further claimed he will never support sex for grades and has been a strong proponent of gender equality, hence the need to protect both men and women.

He wrote;

Good day friends,
Thank you for reaching out to me and all.
It is quiet unfortunate that I didnt get the complete video from BBC, I only got an abridged version and from that I perceived my earlier view but on posting my view, my friends and few facebook contacts called my attention and showed me the complete video.
I would never in any way support sex for grades and I am a strong proponent of gender equity...
Hence the need to protect both men and women... Hence my advice to men to be careful

Lady jailed after killing her fiance over engagement ring

27-year-old Blessing Edet who was arraigned before an Ikeja Special Offences Court for killing her 33-year-old fiance, Edet Ebong during a fight that ensued following her refusal to wear an engagement ring he gave her, has been handed a 10 year jail sentence.

New Telegraph reported that Edet was convicted on a commuted sentence of involuntary manslaughter after being arraigned before Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, over the offence committed around 12:15 am on August 18, 2015 at her apartment in Lekki area of Lagos state.

Giving her account of the incident in court on February 7, she said the deceased wanted her to cook for him by midnight but she refused because she was tired.

“Upon hearing that I was tired, he went into the kitchen and saw the engagement ring he had given me beside the stove. He became angry and asked why I was not wearing the ring.
“He broke a mirror and used part of it to stab me, I was bleeding and I was crying out to the neighbors for help,” she said.

Edet said she stabbed Ebong in the abdomen with a kitchen knife during the fight. Delivering her judgement, Justice Taiwo said:

“By stabbing the deceased in the lower part of his abdomen, she did not intend to cause grievous harm to the defendant. The defendant has established factors necessary to prove self-defence.
“I find that the defendant acted in self-defence as she was a victim of unprovoked assault. The defendant is not guilty of murder but I find her guilty of the involuntary manslaughter of Edet Ebong.
“Section 227 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State prescribes life imprisonment for the offence of involuntary manslaughter. This is a clear case of recklessness on the part of both the deceased and the defendant.
“I hereby sentence the defendant to 10 years imprisonment with no option of fine. The sentence will take effect from the month of August 2015 which is when she has been in custody.”

The AAU student idenified as simply as Eddyson, died two weeks before his graduation. He was said to be full of life before his death.

The deceased's friend, Johnson CBE wrote in his tribute;

I see "death" as an essential condition of living. I intend to always ask a fundamental question because of "death", what's the essence of living when "death" is sure for everyone someday ?, don't tell me anything about purpose or potential, don't tell me God knows, don't tell me about good legacies because "death" will bring all you could ever think and imagine to nothing. It grievs me to marrow that just weeks to graduation this very guy of mine is late today, he was poisoned to death, before they could fix drip and oxygen on him he gave up and it all ended like that. RIP Eddyson.

51-year-old female banker sentenced to one year imprisonment for conspiracy, aiding and abating fraud in Osogbo

A 51-year-old female banker, Yetunde Iyabo Adewunmi, was on Tuesday, October 8, 2019, sentenced to one year imprisonment for conspiracy, aiding and abating fraud. Adewunmi was convicted of the one-count amended charge instituted against her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan zonal office, before Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court 2, sitting in Osogbo, Osun State. Investigation conducted by officials of the Commission had revealed that the convict used her position as a staffer of a new generation bank in Ile Ife, Osun State to forge two identity cards for one Abayomi Samuel Onalaja, an internet fraudster, to enable him cash two Western Union transactions received from his foreign victims. She was said to have benefited N236,736 (Two Hundred and Thirty Six, Seven Hundred and Thirty Six Naira) from the illegal dealings. Owing to the findings, the Commission earlier filed against her a five-count charge bordering on money laundering, but later amended it to one-count after agreeing to a plea bargain option with her. The amended charge professed her guilty of an offence contrary to Section 27(2) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention etc) Act, 2015. She pleaded guilty to the charge and was accordingly convicted. The prosecution counsel Shamusuddeen Bashir had earlier prayed the court to accept the conditions of the plea bargain which included restitution of the proceeds of the crime, and as well confirmed that the Commission had indeed received the sum.
