Senate President: Senate Standing Rule And The National Assembly - Omo-Ikirodah

BATTLE 4 SP : The Senate Standing Rule And The 10th National Assembly Matters Arising(Video)

Numerous Nigerians have debated the Senate standing rule on the Senate Presidency. Some claim that only ranking senators can hold the office, while others claim that history does not support such claim.

Many have emphasised competency, performance, and character as critical qualifications for becoming Senate President.

Since our country's independence, we have had 14 senators serve as president of the Senate, 9 of them were first-timers, leaving us with 5 who were ranking senators prior to their emergence.

A lot of people have stated that all Nigeria currently needs is a senate president who is willing to work hand in hand with the new administration to hasten the delivery of the eagerly anticipated democratic dividends.

Please share your thoughts after watching this video.

Air Peace Offers To Freely Evacuate Nigerians From Sudan

Air Peace has expressed its readiness to evacuate Nigerians who are stranded and willing to leave crisis-ridden Sudan, albeit free of charge.

Speaking with aviation journalists on Sunday night in Lagos, the Chairman of Air Peace, Mr Allen Onyema, lamented that Nigerian students and others stranded in the war-racked nation had urgent “needs our help.”

Air Peace’s only condition
Onyema, however, gave a caveat that it would only evacuate the stranded Nigerians if they could be moved to a neighbouring country to enable the airline would fly there and evacuate them, saying that Sudan’s airspace is closed from civil aviation flights at the moment.

Not the first time Air Peace is doing this
Air Peace had in 2019, deployed flights to evacuate Nigerians from South Africa amid raging xenophobic attacks in the country which threatened many Nigerians.

Onyema explained that he was compelled to help because Nigeria could not afford to lose her citizens in that country, adding that this would be his commitment to making sure that the stranded Nigerians in the war-torn country were safe.

He stressed that everything must not be left to the government alone, especially as the situation calls for urgency and immediate action. He said:

“Again, Air Peace is willing to evacuate Nigerians stranded in Sudan free of charge if the government can get them to a safe and secure airport in any of the neighbouring countries bordering Sudan. Everything must not be left to the government and the government alone. It will be a privilege and honour of tremendous pride that we will be out there to give every Nigerian stranded in Sudan a sense of pride and oneness in their country.

We are very ready to do it immediately. No time wasting. Any action that would promote national pride, national cohesion, peace and unity, we are for it. Again, we have no apologies for believing in our nation and loving the nation despite certain national challenges. If they are moved to Kenya or Uganda or any other country, we will move in to get them out. Some parents have started calling on us to help. We are ready to do this again and again.”

Latest number of verified SA nationals stuck in #Sudan is 77. They're all in a WhatsApp group with embassy staff (who are also still stuck there). Complaints of inconsistent/little/no communication from the team is noted. However, they've run out of diesel. There's no electricity & therefore poor network coverage. They've since found a way to recharge batteries & will update SA nationals regarding evacuation plans. Our security agencies are far advanced with the evacuation plan.

The airport is damaged & closed. Khartoum is effectively a no-fly zone. Intense fighting is continuing. All routes out of Khartoum remain dangerous & risky. The French convoy came under attack. SA government has explored all options & has settled on a particular plan. Coordination with the 77 SA nationals is underway. Our priority is to get everyone out. We understand the frustration & desperation. We'll keep you & everyone posted.

Clayson Monyela, South Africa's Head of Public Diplomacy

We have been given the cost estimate and all the details. They gave us a figure of 5500 who are ready for evacuation. Obviously, what you need in a situation like this is a place where everybody can congregate before you start moving them out. Because the airports, as you pointed out in your report, it is out of commission. The only viable way out is by road.

But of course, it is not totally safe so you are going to require the government to provide some security and a safe corridor out.”, who said the stranded Nigerians may be transported from Sudan by road into Egypt, revealed that already Nigerian Embassy in Cairo, Egypt is making arrangements to receive.

But what they’ve been evacuating were actually their diplomatic staff. They haven’t been able to start evacuating their citizens there. We can’t evacuate all our diplomatic staff at the moment because they need to also coordinate the evacuation of all those students that we’re talking about --- Geoffrey Onyeama (Nigeria's Foreign Affairs Minister)
