Plusvalenza: Italy's Appeal Court Hit Juve With 10-Point Deduction In Serie A

The old lady will host AC Milan at the Allianz Arena on Friday, before the last game of the season at the Stadio Friulli in Udine.

Juventus have been docked 10 points in a new ruling by the Italian football federation’s appeals court after an investigation into the club’s transfer dealings.

The decision sees Juventus drop from second place (69 points) to seventh in the Serie A (59 points), making it highly unlikely they will reach the Champions League.

Juventus were handed a 15-point penalty in January, while several members of its former board were also given bans from football activities, including former president Andrea Agnelli.

The points deduction was suspended last month on an appeal to the country’s highest sports court within the Italian Olympic Committee and referred back to the football federation’s appeals court for a new trial.

During a three-hour hearing on Monday, federation prosecutor Giuseppe Chiné requested an 11-point penalty for Juventus. He had asked for nine back in January. Chiné also requested eight-month bans for seven former Juventus directors, including Pavel Nedvěd, but they were cleared on Monday. Agnelli and three others had their appeals rejected last month.

The Juventus board resigned en masse in November following an investigation by Turin public prosecutors into alleged false bookkeeping. A trial was then re-opened based on information from the Turin prosecutors, leading to the points deduction. Juventus had initially been cleared by the sports court the previous April.

The prosecutors in Turin have also charged Juventus, Agnelli and 11 others with false communications by a company listed publicly on the Milan stock exchange, obstructing watchdog agencies, false billing and market manipulation.

Juventus’ legal troubles deepened still further last week after the Italian football federation also charged the club and seven former team directors with alleged fraud for the way they handled player salary cuts during the coronavirus pandemic.

Juventus reacts
Juventus Football Club takes note of what was decided by the FIGC Court of Appeal and reserves the right to read the reasons to evaluate a possible appeal to the Guarantee Board at CONI.

What was established by the fifth instance of judgment in this matter, which began more than a year ago, arouses great bitterness in the club and in its millions of supporters who, in the absence of clear rules, find themselves extremely penalised with the application of sanctions that seem to take into account the principle of proportionality.

While not ignoring the need for urgency, which Juventus has never shied away from during the proceedings, it is emphasised that these are facts that still have to be evaluated by a judge.

Re: Give Me Seven Weeks To Produce Witnesses, Obi Tells Tribunal - LP

Misquotation of Peter Obi/LP Legal Counsel by Punch Newspapers.

Our attention has been drawn to a misleading report in the Punch Newspaper @MobilePunch of 20th May 2023, captioned “Give me seven weeks to produce witnesses, Obi tells Tribunal” which is a misrepresentation of what our Counsel presented yesterday, before the Election Petition Tribunal.

Peter Obi did not ask the court to give him seven weeks to bring in his witnesses. He only implied he will be through with all 50 of them in seven weeks.

In proposing his schedule of witnesses, Eme Awa Kalu, SAN leading the team in court, had told the court that Peter Obi and Labour Party would be presenting 50 witnesses and that these 50 witnesses, will require 7 weeks to present their evidence before the Tribunal.

At no time did the Counsel say that he required ‘Seven weeks to produce witnesses’ as misreported by the Punch. The correct interpretation of what our lawyers told the court unambiguously is that the presentation of our witnesses, from start to finish, will take seven weeks. We are not asking the court to wait for seven weeks before we bring in the first witness as the Punch story tries to imply.

It is expected that every media house will assign competent reporters to cover this important case.
We expect the Punch Newspaper to immediately correct this misrepresentation with the same front page headline with which it was presented to the public.

Tinubu Cabinet: Muslims Lobby President-elect For More Ministers Than Christians

Cite Muslim majority in Taraba, Adamawa, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Kogi, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Niger, Kaduna, Kebbi, Lagos

•Reverse selves, want ‘top’, not ‘juicy’, job for El-Rufai

Indications emerged last week that the jostle for inclusion in the cabinet of the next federal administration had intensified as some Muslims pleaded with President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu to give more ministerial appointments to members of their own faith than their Christian counterparts.

They begged Tinubu to give Muslims in Muslim-majority states at least four ministerial appointments per geo-political zone after his inauguration.

There are six states in each of the six geo-political zones viz South-South, South-West, North-Central, North-East and North-West.
Only the South-East has five states.

The 1999 Constitution (as amended) provides that each of the 36 states of the federation must have one native in the federal cabinet.

Section 6, Part 1, Section 147 of the Constitution, titled, ‘Ministers of Federal Government’, says specifically: “3 – Any appointment under Subsection 2 by the President shall be in conformity with the provisions of Section 14 (3) of this Constitution: provided that in giving effect to the provisions aforesaid the President shall appoint at least one Minister from each state who shall be an indigene of such state”.

The implication of the Muslims’ lobby is that any geo-political zone where people of their own faith are in the majority, Muslims should have four Ministers in the Tinubu cabinet while Christians should be contented with two.

They listed affected states to include Taraba, Adamawa, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Kogi, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Niger, Kaduna, Kebbi and Lagos.

The lobby is coming on the heels of the controversy generated by the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which won the February 25, 2023 election.

Those in favour of the ticket had said what was important was the competence of the presidential candidate and his running mate while those in opposition said the development would embolden Muslim hardliners to try to Islamize the country.
Separately, the lobbyists made a case for a top job for the outgoing governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, in the Tinubu administration.

They initiatially wanted a ‘juicy job’ for the governor before changing their words to ‘top job’.

The Muslims, who spoke under the aegis of Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), made their case in a statement titled ‘MURIC to Tinubu: Give Muslims in Muslim-Majority States Four Ministers Each’

“As Nigeria warms up for the inauguration of a new administration under the able, tested and trusted leadership of President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we remind the incoming President and other Nigerians of past political marginalization of Muslims in Muslim-majority states since independence”, the statement signed by Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC Executive Director, said.

Marginalisation

Citing the marginalisation of Muslims in some parts of the country under successive administrations despite being in the majority and the opportunity the Tinubu presidency presents to redress the development, the statement said: “We are deeply disturbed that it is only in the core-North where we have states like Sokoto, Borno, Katsina, etc that the right of Muslims to be included in governance is respected.

“Former Christian military Heads of State and civilian Presidents have deliberately marooned Muslims from the political architecture of Muslim-majority states.

“Christians, who were appointed governors over Muslim-majority regions and states, were secretly given instructions to either turn or shake the demographic table in favour of Christianity. “Unfortunately this happened at a time when Muslims were still suffering from paucity of political consciousness in those regions and states.

“Examples of past denial of Muslims in participatory democracy can be found in the appointments of Col David Bamigboye as military governor of Kwara State, a predominantly Muslim-majority state (May 1967 – July 1975) by General Jack Gowon (rtd). Lt. Col. Francis Adekunle Fajuyi was also appointed military governor of the Western Region by General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi.

“The South-West had earlier been led mainly by Christian political leaders featuring Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola and Chief Victor Babaremilekun Adetokunbo Fani-Kayode. The Christianisation agenda of the South-West had also been championed by Christian military administrators and governors like Lt. Col. Robert Adeyinka Adebayo, Mobolaji Johnson, Christopher Oluwole Rotimi, Navy Cap Akintunde Aduwo, Col. David Jemibewon, etc.

“Obasanjo and Jonathan out-Heroded Herod. All the six Ministers appointed by them from the South-West were Christians and Muslims were totally excluded from federal appointments under them. Worse still, they appointed Christians as Ministers from core Muslim states like Bauchi, Kwara and Kaduna.

“This policy of total political blackout for Muslims in Muslim-majority states is contrary to the principles of participatory democracy. It is heartless political exclusion and the height of religious apartheid. We condemn it in the strongest terms.

“Therefore, as the new dawn of political inclusiveness promised by President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu approaches, we demand total departure from the past tortuous political marginalization of Muslims to complete political integration of Muslim citizens in all geo-political zones.

Demand

“In particular, MURIC demands at least four ministerial appointments each for competent Muslims out of the six ministers earmarked for every geopolitical zone where Muslims command majority after Tinubu’s inauguration. “We urge governors in Muslim-majority states to avoid marginalizing Muslims in nominations for ministerial posts.

“We refer specifically to states like Taraba, Adamawa, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Kogi, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Niger, Kaduna, Kebbi, Lagos, etc.

“Nigerian Muslims demand fair representation. We demand inclusiveness and full integration into the Nigerian political space. This is without prejudice to the preference for competence.

“The records set by Professor Ishaq Oloyede (JAMB Registrar) and Professor Isa Ali Pantami (Minister of Communications and Digital Economy) in office remain indubitable proof of hidden administrative icons among Nigerian Muslims although only unbiased Presidents and governors will find them.

“We are not asking Tinubu to sacrifice excellence on the altar of mediocrity. We have no scintilla of doubt that there are eminently qualified Muslims in all fields of human endeavour.

“We assert clearly, emphatically and categorically that failure to find suitable Muslims in any state of the federation for a ministerial appointment is like failure to find coal in Newcastle.

“Of course it is only logical that Ministers from states like Sokoto, Borno, Kano and Jigawa will all be Muslims while those from Enugu, Anambra, Rivers and Cross Rivers will be an all-Christian affair. The governors in those states may give one or two minorities appointments as commissioners and board members.”

‘Juicy’ post

In another statement titled, ‘El-Rufai Deserves Juicy Post’, the group hinged its position for a ‘juicy’ post for El-Rufai under the Tinubu administration on the role played by the Kaduna governor and eleven fellow governors from the North in ensuring that the South got the mandate during the APC presidential primary.

“As the days inch closer to the inauguration of the new administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Nigerian political spectrum has been inundated with power struggle intrigues and post allocation schemes. This is not new to us since we know that failure is an orphan but winners are always surrounded by all and sundry”, the statement said.

“However, we deem it germane to remind the president-elect of the need to pay debts owed and appreciate those who made his current status a fait accompli. This is important in order to start sowing the seed of success for the incoming administration as well as to secure a strong foothold for 2027.

“Gratitude is a major characteristic of a good Muslim. Allah says in the Glorious Qur’an, ‘If you are grateful, I will increase my favours on you…’ (Qur’an 14:7). If the president-elect shows appreciation to the ‘Noble Dozen’ from the North, he will enjoy more of their solidarity.

”It is noteworthy that the ‘Noble Dozen’ (i.e. the twelve governors who insisted that power must shift to the South) was led by Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State.

“There is no Nigerian who is unaware of the unique support and unequalled solidarity given by this northern group to the president-elect. El-Rufai in particular left his palatial office in Kaduna to spend days in Abuja.

“His contribution to our victory, the victory of the Muslim-Muslim ticket is unquantifiable. He became the mouthpiece of the Muslim-Muslim ticket camp, moving from one media house to another. We must not allow all these to go in vain”.

Apology

But in another statement about 24 hours later, entitled, MURIC Withdraws The Word ‘Juicy’, Replaces It With ‘Top’, Apologises, the group said: “Our attention has been drawn to the word ‘juicy’ used in yesterday’s statement as not being decent enough.

“In the statement, we canvassed for a top post to be given to Governor El-Rufai of Kaduna State in the incoming administration. We inadvertently used the word ‘juicy post’ instead of ‘top post’ It is not in our character to be insolent, loose or to use vulgar language.

“We hereby withdraw the word ‘juicy’ and replace it with the word ‘top’. We apologise to all those who might have taken note of the offensive word.”

Real Madrid's Match Vs Valencia Halted After Vinicius Jnr Racially Abused

Fans inside Valencia's Mestalla stadium were warned about racist behaviour, with their game against Real Madrid paused after abuse was allegedly directed at opposition forward Vinicius Junior.

The forward has been racially abused by fans in Spain this season, prompting strong criticism from others in the game. Back in February, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said "nothing in the world" could justify such abuse, expressing his shock at a line of questioning from one reporter.

The match was eventually restarted after a short delay, with Vinicius sent off in second-half stoppage time as Madrid fell to a 1-0 defeat. After the fixture, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti strongly condemned the lack of action being taken.

We have been complaining about this abuse all season and nothing!" Ancelotti told the media after his side's defeat "It has reached the point where the manager must consider taking off his player because the game is not being stopped. There is something wrong with this league if this happens.

According to The Athletic, a message was broadcast over the tannoy after the game was stopped. It reportedly said “racist behaviour from certain spectators would not be tolerated”.

"It wasn't the first time, nor the second, nor the third. Racism is normal in La Liga," the Brazil star wrote on Twitter, as translated by Goal. "The competition thinks it's normal, the [Spanish Football] Federation does too and the opponents encourage it.

I'm so sorry. The championship that once belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano [Ronaldo] and [Lionel] Messi today belongs to racists.

A beautiful nation, which welcomed me and which I love, but which agreed to export the image of a racist country to the world.

"I'm sorry for the Spaniards who don't agree, but today, in Brazil, Spain is known as a country of racists. And unfortunately, for everything that happens each week, I have no defense. I agree. But I am strong and I will go to the end against racists. Even if far from here."

Ancelotti spoke to Movistar TV after the game, explaining he felt what happened to his player was "more important" than the result. Real Madrid fell to third behind Atletico Madrid before kick-off, and stayed there thanks to Diego Lopez's winner for Valencia.

Stampede Erupts In El Salvador League Match. 12 Dead, 500 Injured

At least 12 football fans have reportedly died and around 500 more injured after a stampede of supporters unfolded at a match in El Salvador.

The Monumental stadium in Cuscatlan, about 25 miles northeast of capital San Salvador, was hosting a quarter-final clash between domestic clubs Alianza and FAS. However, the venue's capacity of 44,836 is understood to have been exceeded after hopeful spectators forced their way through an access gate.

The resulting flood of fans saw play suspended just 16 minutes into the match as chaos unfolded on-field. Horrific images from the match showed bodies strewn in tunnels and gangways as medics saw to those injured in the crush.

"It was an avalanche of fans who overran the gate," commented Pedro Hernandez, president of El Salvadoran football's first division. "Some were still under the metal in the tunnel. Others managed to make it to the stands and then to the field and were smothered."

Footage of the incident in Cuscatlan showed the moment fans recognise the seriousness of the crush as it unfolded. Some supporters could be seen fighting to free others from beyond the metal barriers inside a tunnel.

Mauricio Arriaza, director of the National Civil Police, said nine fans died at the hospital, with three more deaths confirmed from different hospitals. "Salvadoran soccer is in mourning," he added.

Reports suggested officials were concerned about fake tickets to the match being sold, with an investigation into the matter already believed to be underway.

Others pictures showed emergency services rushing outside the stadium, scything through a sea of disorientated spectators in states of shock.

The Salvadoran Soccer Federation voiced sympathy for the families of those affected by the tragedy. Local police has said a criminal investigation will take place.

Carlos Fuentes, spokesman for the Rescue Commandos confirmed 'seven men and two women' were among the nine initially believed dead, though that number has since grown.

The President's brother, Yamil, leads El Salvador's national institute of sports and was reported saying a meeting had been called for Sunday to review the tragedy.

FG To Begin Home Delivery Of Passports Soon – Aregbesola

The Federal Government has promised to conclude negotiations with NIPOST on the usage of its speedy mail service to start delivering passports to Nigerians who opt for such a service.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, disclosed this while speaking at the opening of the Nigeria Immigration Service Passport Front Desk Office in Auchi, Edo State, on Saturday, 20th May 2023.
“We are in the final stage of concluding negotiations with NIPOST to begin using its speed mail service to deliver passports to Nigerians wherever they are in the world after production,” the Minister disclosed.

According to a statement by Sola Fasure, Media Adviser to the Minister, the launch of an additional Passport Front Office in Auchi, Edo State, was part of the government’s effort towards effective service delivery to Nigerians.

He quoted Aregbesola as saying it was the intention of the government to provide the passport to anyone desirous of it within a reasonable time, at an affordable price and without any stress.

Aregbesola, while stating that Edo State has one of the highest passport applications in Nigeria, revealed that the waiting period between application and collection would likely increase due to the recent increase in demand.

In his words: “Our current working schedule is that fresh application would take six weeks after biometric data registration and three weeks for renewal. This is reasonable, competitive and in line the global best practices.

“The challenge, however, is the waiting period at the point of application and data registration.
“All applicants will be put in a queue, depending on the centre of their choice, to determine the registration date. Regrettably, it might take two months in some highly competitive centres where the application is very high. We have no control over this.”

He however said that the Federal Government is intentional about opening more front desk offices, in order to increase the registration centres and reduce the waiting period before biometric data capture.

This year alone, the Minister of Interior had been in Daura in Katsina State, Alimosho in Lagos, Ilesa in Osun, Zaria in Kaduna and Oyo in Oyo State to commission Passport Front Desk Offices.

Speaking earlier, the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Isah Jere Idris, said that the choice of Auchi is apt, as Edo State ranks fifth amongst states with the highest volume of passport applications locally.

According to him, “In the past 365 days, Edo state has processed 56,291 applications out of the 1.5 million passports produced in Nigeria. The commissioning of this front office will no doubt go a long way in reducing the traffic in Edo State and other neighbouring States.”
