Buhari: Stop Begging Just Explain What Happened By Dele Sobowale

Who will guard the guards themselves?” Juvenal 60-120 AD.

Politicians are most humble twice. First, when they are begging for votes; and, second, when on their way out of office which they abused. President Buhari, recently, asked Nigerians to forgive him without specifically stating for what. That is the sort of dishonesty for which politicians are renowned universally.

President Buhari, recently, asked Nigerians to forgive him – without specifically stating for what. That is the sort of dishonesty for which politicians are renowned universally.

They reckon, quite rightly, that most of their Fellow Citizens are damn fools, who can be treated badly when they wield power; and told ”don’tvex” when they become ordinary people again with a ton load of crimes against humanity.

Well, some of us are not among the fools who can be pacified by plea for forgiveness by the leader of the most corrupt regime in our history.

By pointing frequently to the corruption engulfing previous governments, Buhari diverted our attention from his own. Unfortunately for Buhari, God has a way of revealing truths which conspirators assumed had been buried for ever.

As he begins his last month in office, it is becoming increasingly clear that corruption by his government started right from the start in 2015.

And, apparently, the pattern which developed later was based on a two-prong strategic plan. The first part of the plan was to install a Minister for Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, who, instead of being the chief law enforcer, became the chief law breaker. Malami would besupported by the Accountant General and others. The lawman becomes the outlaw when it pleases him.

The second part of the plan consisted in getting installed two rubber stamps in the National Assembly, NASS – Senate President and Speaker of the House.  The two are there to prevent the NASS from performing its oversight functions.

They played their roles to perfection. But, none of them will occupy those exalted positions in the 10th Assembly. So, in the final hour of the 9th NASS the two chambers are now embarking on probes for alleged corrupt practices involving Mr Malami from 2015 and 2019, and the Accountant General of the Federation, AGF.

Here are a few reports to help readers understand how a well-organised conspiracy and cover-up by Buhari’s officials have impoverished the nation.

It is no longer news that Malami and Mrs Zainab Ahmed, the Minister of Finance, were just recently summoned to come and explain what happened to the $2.4 billion worth of crude oil sold to China in 2015 and the proceeds of the sale collected by Malami without evidence that the amount was remitted to the Federation Account. Mrs Zainab Ahmed can be exonerated in this case. She was not the Finance Minister in 2015.

Instead of presenting a receipt for paying into the Federation Account, Malami has been running from pillar to post. The most obvious questions Nigerians must ask are: when did the Minister of Justice become the government official charged with selling Nigerian crude and collecting revenue for it? If we are now just discovering suspicious transactions in 2015 now, how many more such sales were made since then that were not also properly accounted for?

“Crude oil exports: Malami allegedly paid $200m as whistleblower fees – Reps Report, April 20, 2023.

From this report, one comes away with the impression that Mr Malami was given a free and illegal hand to dip into the Federation Account without restraint.

In this case, the transaction was approved by Buhari, who did not have enough sense to take three steps, one, to ask if the AGF was empowered by the constitution to get involved in such payments; two, to ask if the Auditor General’s office had vetted the request; and three, to ask if NASS approval was needed.

Buhari signed; the Central Bank paid and until now few people knew the basis for the claim; and who were the owners of the companies paid.

Disposal of Recovered Loot

It is quite possible that the reader has forgotten about a man called Magu. Well, he was the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, before the current warmer of the seat– who has unhealthy contempt for courts. He gets away with his lawlessness because the Inspector General of Police, IGP, who is supposed to arrest him, is a “brother”.

But, mostly, he gets away with it because he is also a “brother” to Buhari, the nation’s chief law enforce-ment officer, who is unashamedly discriminatory in enforcing the law. Kanu has not stolen a kobo; but, he is locked up. Buhari’s “brothers” alleged to have robbed the nation blind are walking around free.He begs for forgiveness.

Magu was declared suspended at first; and Justice Salami (rtd) regrettably was asked to conduct a judicial inquiry into the affairs of the EFCC under Magu. All these were based on allegations of mismanagement of looted assets by Magu made by Malami. The accuser got more than he bargained for. Magu, in his defence opened several cans of worms implicating the Minister in various instances of re-looted loot.

Till today, the report of the Justice Salami inquiry has not been released. Those of us who followed the proceedings knew that Buhari would never allow the report to be released. From sources working with Salami, it would appear that some of the assets, exotic cars, jewelleries found their way into the possession of those in Aso Rock corridors of power.

Again, attempts by the NASS to look into the malodorous activities have been frustrated by Malami– who is indisputably the central figure in the covert disposal of recovered loot.

In all these, President Buhari became totally un-Presidential. Instead he descended to the level of a local and ethnic champion. He repeatedly carpeted the Jonathan administration for looting; while at the same time vigorously defending his “brothers” who committed worse crimes.

Who Stole Nigeria’s Oil And What Did Buhari Do?

“Jonathan’s Ministers behind oil theft – Buhari”. Report , July 23, 2015.

Buhari said the documents at his disposal indicated some former Ministers and other top government officials of massive fraud including oil theft…Some former Ministers were selling about one million barrels per day”.

That report, which was retrieved from my archives (there is more where that came from) should tell any honest and patriotic Nigerian the sort of individual we made President for eight years. Self-respecting Presidents don’t tell bold-faced lies; neither do they share unfounded rumour with the people.

So, unless Buhari was lying or promoting defamatory rumours, we have to accept that he was indeed in possession of damning evidence that some people in GOJ’s government were stealing one million barrels of crude oil a day.

A patriotic and responsible President would have had all the culprits rounded up, prosecuted and made to cough up the loot. Buhari did not get anybody arrested or punished till today. Even at $50 per barrel, $50 million was being stolen per day and Buhari did nothing – or so it seemed at first glance.

We now know that crude was sold later in the year and the funds were not remitted to the Federation Account. Nobody, but the members of the syndicate stealing Nigerian crude, knows how much Nigeria lost and how much the thieves gained. But, those are the questions we need Buhari to answer for us.

“Senate probes Accountant General over N74bn social benefits funds.” Report, April 13, 2023.  All the reader needs to know is that the same Accountant General is already in Court for embezzling N89bn– a record for the public service.

APC Cautions Peter Obi: You're Crossing The Line With Your Accusations

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has said the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is crossing the line with his recent accusations against it.

This was disclosed by the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Felix Morka, during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, May 3, 2023.

This is coming as a response to Obi's recent claims that the APC and its supporters have been attacking his personality since he decided to challenge the victory of the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT).

Pulse reports that Obi and Labour Party have petitioned the PETP seeking among others the disqualification of Tinubu and an outright cancellation of his victory as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The petitioners argued that the President-elect didn't meet all the constitutional requirements to be declared elected having failed to record 25% of total votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory.

Obi has been mired in a series of controversies in recent times including a 'leaked audio' of him and Bishop David Oyedepo in which the latter former to the February 25 presidential election as a "religious war" as well as an alleged detention and deportation from the United Kingdom.

Reacting to the incidents in a recent interview on Arise, Obi accused the ruling party of masterminding the events with the intention being to silence him and distract attention from the irregularities that characterised Tinubu's emergence.

Responding to Obi, Morka said the former Anambra State governor's accusation is ridiculous.

He said: “Peter Obi is really crossing the line, the campaigns are over, he needs to relax and allow his lawyers handle his case at the tribunal, accusing the APC of attacking his personal life is ridiculous.

“Obi has been way too sanctimonious for someone who volunteered to venture into politics and run for the presidency.

“He did not win the elections, he came a distant third, and he has made a political capital of exploiting people’s vulnerabilities.”

Bill Seeking To Criminalise Mob Actions Scales Through First Reading

A bill prescribing a five-year jail term for unlawful protesters in Nigeria has been approved for a second reading at the House of Representatives on Thursday, IGBERETV reports.

The bill which was sponsored by Rep. Emeka Chinedu Martins (PDP-Imo), seeks to amend the Criminal Code Act, Cap 38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 “to further preserve the sanctity of human life and property, and to provide specifically for the crime of mob action, prescribe punishment and other matters.”

The bill proposes to punish individuals who participate in unlawful assembly, riot and mob action.

“When an unlawful assembly has begun to act in so tumultuous a manner as to disturb the peace, the assembly is called a riot, and the persons assembled are said to be riotously assembled.

“When an unlawful assembly becomes violent as to commit unlawful acts against any person or property, the assembly is called a mob and their violent act is referred to as mob action”.

The bill also stated that whoever participate in a riot is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for three years, while mob action is five years imprisonment.

“The Criminal Code Act in section 69 defines riot as when an unlawful assembly turns tumultuous as to disturb the peace, but did not provide for when the unlawful assembly turns violent against persons and property.

“This amendment to the Bill seeks to remedy that by providing for specific amendments to sections 69, 71 and 76 of the Criminal Code Act dealing with mob action and further prescribing punishment for the crime.

“The amendment to the Act will encourage our law enforcement agencies to go after persons involved in mob action and give impetus to the criminal justice system to bring such offenders to book.”, he added.

Government Not Responsible For Creating Jobs – Femi Adesina

The Special Adviser to the President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina said it is not the responsibility of the government to create jobs.

Adesina stated this in an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday.

Speaking on the achievements of the Buhari in the last eight years, Adesida noted that all that the government does is create an enabling environment for creating jobs while the private sector creates jobs.

On President Buhari’s promise to create 3 million jobs annually in 2015, Adesina said, “Did you say 3 million was the promise? I wouldn’t say he put a figure. What I recall was that President Buhari gave the per cent of joblessness in the country.

“I wouldn’t recall that he gave a specific figure for the number of jobs we are creating. For all you know, that may have come from anywhere.

Regard as it may, it is the job and the duty of the government to create an enabling environment for jobs in the country. It is not the government itself that creates jobs. All it does is to create an enabling environment,” he said.

Adesina, however, noted that Buhari has achieved in all sectors including oil and gas, infrastructure, legislative matters, and security.

He said, “Most of the jobs you need in a country would come from the private sector. As long as you have an enabling environment, it is the private sector that will create the jobs.”
