PRESS RELEASE

KADUNA STATE HAS EVACUATED ALL ITS SCHOLARSHIP BENEFICIARIES IN SUDAN AND HAS ALSO COMMENCED THE EVACUATION OF ALL KADUNA STATE STUDENTS

This is to inform the General Public that, the Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has directed the complete evacuation of all Kaduna State residents studying in Sudan. Kaduna State Scholarship and Loans Board's Team, led by its Executive Secretary, Hassan Rilwan, has painstakingly, been working round the clock to ensure the safe return of the students as directed. The Board, has moved to emergency mode, meaning that, staff have been on ground daily at the office to respond to the students needs, parents enquiries, Embassy liaison and general coordination of the evacuation mission. The first bus carrying the 50 verified students of Kaduna State as at April 29, 2023 are currently close to the Sudanese-Egyptian Border to join other students awaiting clearance into Egypt.

Another bus is scheduled to leave today, April 30, 2023 once the students verification is complete. The State Government has given an express approval to airlift the students, once they gain entrance into Egypt. A team from Kaduna State are to receive the students on the Egyptian side, to facilitate their airlifting to Nigeria either through the Federal Government or the State Government's flight arrangement, depending on which is ready first.

Parents should note that, no exclusive arrangement can be made for Kaduna students, because the Government of Egypt has not given clearance to allow the busses into Egypt. The Federal Ministries of Foreign Affairs of both countries are working to sort out the issues. The Board, has sent an advance manifest to the Embassies of Nigeria in Sudan and Egypt with formal request for consular services at the Boarder.

Against this backdrop, We therefore, call on parents of affected students to continue to exercise patience at this trying time, as we continue to monitor and ensure the safe return of our students back to Kaduna State.

Sanwo-Olu Unveils Electric Buses In Lagos

I am excited to announce the first set of electric buses in the Lagos Mass Transit Master Plan as part of our increased effort to modernise every sector of Lagos. Thanks to our partnership with @Oando_PLC, Lagosians can expect a cleaner and greener public transportation system.

With the ability to travel 280km at full charge, taking into account our unique travel times in Lagos, our electric buses are a game-changer. With an average daily usage of 200km by existing BRTs, there is no need to fear that the buses can stop while in transit.

Our new electric buses will not only reduce carbon emissions but will also increase efficiency. This means that Lagosians can say goodbye to high fuel costs and hello to cost-efficient transportation. We shall be running a pilot scheme over the next few months to gather sufficient data required to analyse the operational efficiencies relative to the current BRT buses to further improve our public transport service.

This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to creating a sustainable future for Lagos.

We understand the need for charging stations to power our electric buses, which is why we are partnering with Oando Clean Energy Limited to strategically place Universal Chargers at public places like malls and gas stations. We also plan to establish an Assembly Plant for Electric Buses in the near future.

This is just the beginning of our efforts to transform Lagos into an even smarter city as we continue to increase our fleet of electric vehicles, further modernizing the Lagos transportation system.

Join us in embracing the future of mobility in Lagos.

Nigeria Defeats Zambia 1-0 (Under 17 African Nations Cup)

2023 U-17 AFCON: Dominant Eaglets Beat Zambia 1-0 In Group Opener

April 30, 2023 7:07 pm

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets got their 2023 U-17 AFCON off to a perfect start, after a dominant and hard fought 1-0 win against Zambia in Group B in Constantine on Sunday, Completesports.com reports.

Favour Daniel’s goal with less than 20 minutes left secured the win for Nduka Ugbade side.

The Eaglets also missed a penalty very late in the game as substitute Light Eke missed the opportunity.

Up next for the Eaglets is a clash with Morocco on Wednesday, May 3rd.

Just three minutes into the game the Eaglets had a shout for a penalty after Abubakar Abdullahi was fouled inside the box but the referee ignored the call.

In the ninth minute a ferocious shot from Emmanuel Michael narrowly missed the target.

The Eaglets thought they had opened the scoring on 13 minutes but it was ruled out for offside.

Precious Williams had the chance to put the Eaglets ahead in the 39th minute but failed to convert.

With four minutes left in the first half a bullet shot from a Zambian player came off the Eaglets’ cross bar.

On 63 minutes Daniel got a chance but could not find the back of the net.

The breakthrough eventually came for the Eaglets on 77 minutes as Daniel pounced on a loose ball in the area to score.

In the 90th minute the Eaglets had the chance to double their lead but substitute Eke saw his penalty saved by the Zambian keeper.

Presidential Election That Produced Tinubu Not Free, Fair ― Prof Onigbinde

Akinyemi Onigbinde, a professor of political philosophy with a speciality in public policies, politics and governance, has stated that the election that produced President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was not free and fair.

Onigbinde, who is also the Executive Secretary, Centre for Development and Policy Studies, in an interview with Nigerian Tribune, said the elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the 2023 presidential elections was not credible and also alleged that the BVAS was deliberately disabled to favour candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Tinubu.

“We saw it as it happened even in the last elections conducted by INEC. Without prejudice to whatever the court will say, the election that produced Tinubu was not free and fair. INEC deliberately disabled BVAS for the presidential election. Why did it work for the National Assembly election which was held on the same day? Suddenly, they said BVAS did not work again,”
 he said.

Onigbinde also alleged that the general elections in Lagos was tampered with to reduce the votes of the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Peter Obi, saying, “We have it on good authority that the result in Lagos was terribly doctored to reduce the votes of Peter Obi.”

He added that by alleging the APC of using violence and playing the tribal card to gain the advantage of the Yorubas and divide the electorate, “they went overdrive in the governorship election. In fact, they reduced my humanity as a Yoruba person with the kind of bigotry displayed in the second election. Suddenly, the election turned to where we had to bring in Igunnu masquerade and oro, with people beaten out of the queue. Even some Yoruba who look like Igbo people were beaten and denied the chance to vote in the election.

“We should know that these politicians have captured even the judiciary. Look at the pronouncements of the Supreme Court on Senators Ahmed Lawan and Godswill Akpabio, people who did not even take part in the primaries of their parties were declared the rightful candidates. Look at Imo State today. So, whoever has access to the judiciary now gets the votes.

“We should call what we have a civilian administration and not civil administration because there is nothing civil even in the way these people come to power. Rigging no longer has finesse as far as these people are concerned. Baales in Lagos threatened people not to come out and vote for the candidates of their choice unless they were ready to vote for a particular candidate.

“They did this to ensure a section of the voters did not come out to vote. So, I don’t know what you meant by being harsh in my statement. There is total state capture. Nobody outside the political class, no matter your ideas, can win an election now. Who are you to have ideas on how you intend to want to run the country better when a party sold its nomination forms for N100m? Election has been turned into a lottery. The N100m is a ticket to get you into the lottery room, not even to begin to play. To play, which is to contest the election, you require hundreds of billions of naira. Do you know what N100m is?”

The Professor decried the monetary tool employed by politicians and the weaponization of poverty, saying; “We have monetised politics and weaponised poverty. People now just go to queue behind the person who can give them food. I am from Egba in Ogun Central, but I have been one of the advocates of the Yewa agenda over the years. How could you have a people, out of three senatorial districts in the state, who have not been able to produce the governor of the state? Suddenly, somebody who has played all his politics in Lagos State and whose name has never been mentioned as being from Yewa has now become a Yewa person, maybe he just remembered the story of his great grandfather who was said to have come from Ilaro or wherever and switched over to Yewa.

“Immediately, they handed over the political structure to him because he has money. From being a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, later House of Representatives and Senate twice, he is now the Senator-elect from Yewa. The people of Yewa rejected their own, tested and trusted sons and daughters who had been there for them. It is about money. He has enough money to send everybody away from the dance floor. Once a musician sees you as the one with the deepest pocket, he will switch to singing your praise. People won’t know there is any other person on the dance floor.”

Transform South-East Into Dubai – Ohanaeze Tasks South-East Governors

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has urged the President-elect, Bola Tinubu and incoming state governors of the Southeast to transform the region into the “Dubai” of West Africa.

Ohanaeze’s Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, made the call in response to a proposed move by Southwest states to launch a regional railway line and electricity projects.

Isiguzoro said Tinubu’s administration and those of the incoming governors should establish rail lines across Owerri, Onitsha, Awka and Abakaliki.

Speaking with DAILY POST, Isiguzoro said: “Ohanaeze is calling on the new governors from the Southeast and that of Imo and Anambra to take drastic measures to ensure that rail line passes through Owerri, Onitsha, Awka, and Abakaliki.

“Ohanaeze is taking a lead role in ensuring that there is a rail connection from the commercial nerve centre of the Southeast, Aba, to Owerri to Onitsha where there is a dry seaport.

“But there is no connection between Enugu to Abakaliki. We are challenging the new governors to ensure that by January 2024 we must have achieved 80 per cent of these regional railway lines and electricity.”

He also said further: “We want to congratulate the Abia State Governor for building a geometric power plant in Aba through Professor Nnagi which has been providing electricity for the SMEs and lighting up Aba and its environs.

“We also commend the Ebonyi State governor for the International Airport that would create employment and business opportunities for the people of the state. We are looking at these industrial revolutions that, if properly managed by the incoming administration of Southeast governors, like the regional railway and electricity designed by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, will transform the Southeast into Dubai and the centre of attraction of West Africa.”

According to him, this agenda cannot be achieved without the support of the incoming Tinubu administration.

Isiguzoro added: “Ohanaeze is urging our people to stop the spirit of antagonism which has turned our region into a horrible place. Most of the marginalisation cry is done by external factors.

“We must end the marginalisation mentality and have a productive mentality. We should form alliances with the moving train.”

NNPC Ex-GMD, Yakubu Sues EFCC, CBN, GTB Over Alleged Non-Release Of $9.8M

Andrew Yakubu, former Group Managing Director, GMD, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has sued the EFCC, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and the Guarantee Trust Bank, GTB, over alleged refusal to release his 9.8 million dollars after a court judgment.

Mr Yakubu, through his counsel, Ahmed Raji, SAN, filed the suit before Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court, Abuja.

The originating summons, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/231/2023, was dated and filed on March 8, with EFCC, CBN and GTB listed as 1st to 3rd defendants respectively.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed had, on March 31, 2022, discharged and acquitted ex-NNPC GMD of money laundering charge.

Justice Mohammed held that the EFCC failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt but the anti-corruption agency had appealed against the judgment.

Mr Yakubu, in the suit, asked whether “the court did not become dominus litis of the respective sums of $9,773,200 and £74,000 belonging to” him when same was put in issue, and in evidence before the court in charge number: FHC/ABJ/CR/43/2017 between Federal Republic of Nigeria v. Engr Andrew Yakubu, and in respect of which judgment was delivered on the 31st of March, 2022.”

He said if the question was answered in the affirmative, he further asked whether the EFCC ought to still have in its custody his seized monies after a sister court gave a judgment in his favour on March 31, 2022.

Mr Yakubu, therefore, asked whether the monies ought not to be released to him forthwith, or paid into an account under the control of the registry of the court, pending the outcome of the appeal lodged by the EFCC against the said judgment.

He sought an order directing the defendants to immediately release the monies to him in view of the court judgment.

Alternatively, he sought an order directing them to immediately transfer the said monies into an account under the control of the FHC chief registrar or into an account to be operated by the chief registrar, the EFCC and him, pending the determination of the appeal.

But the EFCC, in a notice of preliminary objection, prayed the court to dismiss Yakubu’s application.

In the motion dated March 20 and filed April 12 by Faruk Abdullah, the anti-graft agency argued that the suit constituted an abuse of court process.

It said that the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

The commission said it also relied on the earlier processes filed before the court where it raised jurisdictional issues and urged the court to strike out the entire suit

In the affidavit in support of the motion deposed to by Sambo Mayana, a detective with the commission, EFCC averred that most of Yakubu’s depositions did not reflect the correct position of the case.

It said that an appeal had already been file in appeal number: CA/ABJ/CR/653/2022.

Besides, it said that there were other appeals arising from the case pending at the Supreme Court with appeal number:. SC/CR/241/2020, between the Federal Government and Yakubu, and appeal number: $C/CR/223/2020 between Yakubu and FG.

The EFCC argued that while parties were awaiting date for hearing of case SC/CR/223/2020 at the Supreme Court, Yakubu brought an application before the apex court to direct the commission to deposit the monies in a bank account to be managed by the registry of the Supreme Court.

It said Mr Yakubu, by this present suit, replicated his application at the Supreme Court and seeking same to be determined by this count.

The EFCC urged the court to discountenance Yakubu’s application and uphold its preliminary objection in the interest of justice.
