Court Convicts False Emergency Caller, Uzuokwu Solomon, In Lagos

The Magistrate sitting at the Samuel Ilori Magistrate Court Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos has yesterday convicted one Uzuokwu Solomon of the two counts charge preferred against him by the State.

Magistrate Bambo Odueke committed him to a month imprisonment with an option of a fine and a month of community service that includes campaign against false calls within the jurisdiction of the State. Whereas the convict opted for the fine.

The Magistrate who tempered justice with mercy passed the minimum sentence of the law on him after the defendant showed remorse and wasted no time of the court by pleading guilty to breaching the public peace and making hoax Fire emergency call.

The ruling also follows the court's acknowledgement of the noble firefighting profession and the effective service delivery of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service that required the encouragement of all and sundry.

The Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye expressed her delight at the swift prosecution of the case to serve as a deterrent to other misguided citizens who are in the habit of making false calls and misleading emergency responders.

Adeseye also used the occasion to note the seemingly reduction in false calls since the advent of the case and pledged to work with the culprit in using his community service as another medium to reach a large audience among other efforts being champion by the Agency.

Recall the culprit had reportedly placed a call on Friday, April 14, 2023 at 17:35 hours to Harmony Estate, Langbasa, Ajah, Lagos and reported a Fire emergency within the estate leading to the dispatch of the Lekki Phase II fire Service Station. On arrival of the Fire crew at the estate, every efforts to trace the acclaimed Fire outbreak proved abortive.

He however first appeared in court penultimate Wednesday, April 19 which was adjourned till today for the conclusion of the matter in record time to ensure that justice is not denied.

Buhari: In Eight Years, We Equipped Security, Subdued Terrorists, Bandits

President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that his government since inception in 2015 has succeeded in adequately equipping the security agencies, as well as subduing the activities of terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and other criminal elements in the country.

Speaking in Abuja Thursday at a ceremony attended by two former leaders of the country, Gen. Yakubu Gowon and Dr Goodluck Jonathan, the president declared that upon his assumption of office in May 2015, the nation’s security situation was greatly challenged by the activities of violent non-state actors.

According to him, “Today, I am pleased to specially note that the situation has tremendously improved and I wish to also proudly highlight that we have made remarkable progress in the fight against insurgents, militants, oil bunkers, kidnappers and other criminal elements in the country.

This administration has achieved a remarkable transformation of the military in the areas of fighting power, training, operations, manpower, remunerations and medical services. These are in addition to maintenance efficiency, accommodation and expansion of forces. The improvements in these areas have collectively enhanced the Army’s capacity to effectively carry out its constitutional mandate.’’

He noted that the robust plan to improve the security architecture of the country had been realized, with the upgrading of hardware, building of facilities, training, and equipping of staff and officers, and structuring of a welfare system that caters for more than 50,000 children of fallen heroes.

The president said he instituted the recruitment of 60,000 soldiers into the Armed Forces, and thousands graduated from the Nigerian Defence Academy and other security institutions to tighten security.

Buhari presented 81 new, symbolic flags to the various units of the Nigerian Army.

His words: “As an administration, we have demonstrated commitment to increasing the strength of the Armed Forces in my resolve to secure the country’s challenges. It is instructive to state that from 2015 when I was sworn in as the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces Federal Republic of Nigeria, I facilitated the recruitment of over 60,000 soldiers from Depot Nigerian Army aside from thousands commissioned from the Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna.’’ [/b]

The president, who endorsed 81 flags for the various units of the Army, noted that the fighting power of Nigeria’s military was at a low ebb as of May 2015, adding that: “However, seven years later, its fighting power has increased significantly making it fourth in ranking among African militaries as against seventh in 2015.’’

He said interventions and yearly budgetary allocations to the Army, between 2020 and 2022 alone, had been able to procure hundreds of Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles, Troops Carrying Vehicles, utility vehicles, tanks, and Armoured Personnel Carriers to augment those earlier procured.

From 2017 to 2022, significant numbers of new fighting and utility vehicles along with supporting artillery guns, machine guns, rifles and corresponding ammunition were acquired and inducted into various theatres of operations. This translates to a significant increment in the Army’s equipment holding since 2015.

“With the significant improvement in the fighting power as a result of the procurement of equipment and mission-specific training, the Army was empowered to rejig its operations. Accordingly, the Army has restructured the conduct of its operations to meet current realities.

The quantum of platforms inducted into the Army since 2015 had enabled troops to take the battle to the terrorists and criminals, particularly in the North-east resulting in the recapture of territories hitherto held by the insurgents,’’ the president stated.

Buhari told the gathering of top security chiefs, traditional rulers and top government officials, who witnessed the ceremony, that the creation of the Army Aviation was one of the major aspects of the ongoing expansion process in the Nigerian Army.

This unit, when fully operationalized, will provide rapid deployment, close air support, casualty evacuation and prompt delivery of logistics supply, among other roles.”

The president said the efforts of the administration paid off with records of unprecedented successes, evident in the increased number of neutralized insurgents and those that voluntarily surrendered alongside their families for deradicalization and rehabilitation through Operation Safe Corridor.

LP Is Going Into Extinction: Prophet Olujobi Warns Sanwo-olu, Others

Prophet Bisi Olujobi on Friday shared his vision on happenings that may occur in Nigeria in the coming months.

The cleric, in a statement, commented on the Labour Party (LP), Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife, Queen Silekunola Naomi.

Others are Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun, Ladi Adebutu and Leke, son of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCC) leader, Pastor Enoch Adeboye.

“The present Labour Party will go into extinction…in a matter of time,” declared the General Overseer of Wisdom Church of Christ International in Ketu, Lagos.

The septuagenarian said Governor Sanwo-Olu’s second term will bring about “more improvement”, but advised him to be wary of “praise mongers”.

“He should not segregate any tribe. Some people would want to mislead him into doing that, especially segregating the Igbos, who didn’t vote for him during the election.”

On Adeboye’s son, Olujobi said he would enter “spiritual confusion” and needs fervent prayers “as there are thick conspiracy against him”.

The clergyman predicts the attacks will manifest in the nearest future and take a new dimension “immediately his father passes on”.

On Queen Naomi, he said she has no chance with any other man than Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi whom she had a child with; “Any step aside this will result in tragedy.”

Olujobi, however, prophesied Naomi and the traditional ruler will reconcile, while “other women with the Ooni will evaporate one after the other”.

On Ogun politics, he said though Adetutu has “a crown on his head,” he will not have an upper hand in his legal action to unseat Ogun governor, Dapo Abiodun.

Speaking on Sudan, the prophet stated that the war is targeted at East African countries, urging the continent’s leaders to unite and serve with the fear of God.

“Many blood will still be shared. I see the war lingering for another two years. Uganda, South Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia will be affected, except they pray and work harder”, he noted.

Frank Lampard, Expected To Stay As Interim Coach Until The End Of The Season

Chelsea plan has not changed despite poor results. Frank Lampard, expected to stay as interim coach until the end of the season.

Negotiations between Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino continue in order to complete the agreement.

Remember, Frank Lampard has become the first Chelsea manager in the club's 118-year history to lose his first five games in charge.

Lampard returned to Stamford Bridge on April 6 for a short-term spell until the end of the season following the dismissal of Graham Potter.

However, matters certainly haven't gone to plan so far, and Lampard has now broken an unwanted record, as reported by The Mirror.

Impose visa ban on Buhari after May 29, PDP urges international community

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Friday demanded an international travel ban on President Muhammadu Buhari after the May 29 inauguration of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu.

PDP’s spokesman, Debo Ologunagba, made the call in reaction to Buhari’s comment that PDP and the Labour Party, LP, lost the presidential election due to overconfidence.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, Ologunagba said Buhari was “gloating over the All Progressives Congress, APC, reckless rigging,” while demanding “international sanctions and travel ban after May 29.”

Ologunagba said:
“We have called you up again today to address the unfortunate, reckless, unpresidential conduct and subjudice comment credited to the President, General Muhammadu Buhari which is already causing apprehension and capable of destroying our corporate existence as a Nation.

“As you are aware, the February 25, 2023 Presidential election has been adjudged across the nation and Globally as the worst in the history of our country.

“The Presidential election was marred by brazen violation of the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2023, INEC Regulations and Guidelines; manipulation of processes, alteration of genuine results from Polling Units, announcement of fabricated figures and climaxed by the vexatious declaration of the defeated candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Winner.

“The general despondency, resentment and anger across our country; the damning reports by election observers and the pervading international contempt against Nigeria since the declaration of the APC candidate as President-elect are ominous testaments that he does not have the mandate of majority of Nigerians derivable ONLY from a credible electoral process.

“As you are also aware, the PDP is already at the Tribunal with the prospects of reclaiming the mandate freely given to our Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar at the Presidential election.”

Nigerians Should Back Tinubu, Politics Time Is Over – Wike

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State is asking Nigerians to rally around President-elect Bola Tinubu, saying the time for politics is over.

Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) defeated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) to clinch the seat in the hotly-contested February poll.

Although Wike belongs to the PDP (did not support the party’s candidate but worked for Tinubu), the Rivers leader is asking Nigerians to back the incoming administration which is set to be sworn in on May 29th, 2023.

‘Time for Governance’

“Elections have come and gone. The winner has emerged and therefore is it necessary for all Nigerians to give him the necessary support for the interest of Nigeria,” Wike told journalists after meeting with Tinubu at the Defence House in Abuja on Friday.

“I am confident that he has what it takes to turn Nigeria around,”
 the governor added.

Wike was accompanied by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State who also re-echoed his Rivers counterpart’s comment.

“I came here to basically pay homage to the President-elect and to let him know that elections are over and this is [time for ]governance and we would do our best to give him support for the good governance of Nigeria,” the Oyo governor noted.

Makinde, Wike and other members of the PDP G-5 did not back Atiku for the presidency, insisting that the position should return to southern Nigeria after eight years of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

They, therefore, argued that Atiku from the northern region of Nigeria, same as Buhari, is unqualified to contest the election with Wike and Makinde backing Tinubu instead.

On his part, a member of the G-5, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State supported Labour Party’s Obi (who is from southern Nigeria) but lost his senatorial bid.

Sperm Donor Who Fathered 550 Children Ordered To STOP

Dutch judges have ordered a man suspected of fathering more than 550 children through sperm donations to stop donating, in the latest fertility scandal to shock the Netherlands.

The man, identified in Dutch media only as Jonathan M, 41, was taken to court by a foundation protecting the rights of donor children and by the mother of one of the children allegedly fathered from his sperm.

Dutch clinical guidelines say a donor should not father more than 25 children in 12 families, but judges said the man had helped produce between 550 and 600 children since he started donating sperm in 2007.

The court therefore “prohibits the defendant from donating his semen to new prospective parents after the issuing of this judgment”, judge Thera Hesselink said on Friday.

Jonathan M may also not contact any prospective parents “with the wish that he was willing to donate semen … advertise his services to prospective parents or join any organisation that establishes contact between prospective parents”, Hesselink said in a written judgment.

Should he continue with his donations, he would face a €100,000 (£88,000) fine for each transgression, as well as additional fines, the judge ordered.

The mother of one of the children in the court case, identified only as “Eva”, said she was grateful that the court had stopped the man from “mass donations that [have] spread like wildfire to other countries”.

“I’m asking the donor to respect our interests and to accept the verdict, because our children deserve to be left alone,” she said in a statement.

More than 100 of Jonathan M’s children were born in Dutch clinics and others privately, but he also donated to a Danish clinic – named as Cryos in court papers – which then dispatched his semen to private addresses in various countries.

“The donor deliberately misinformed prospective parents about the number of children he had already fathered in the past,” the district court in The Hague said.

“All these parents are now confronted with the fact that the children in their family are part of a huge kinship network, with hundreds of half-siblings, which they did not choose,” it said.

The court considered it “sufficiently plausible” that this has or could have negative psychosocial consequences for the children.

This included psychological problems around identity and fears of incest.
