Woman Sold Her 18-Month-Old Baby ₦600,000 To Pay Bank Loan In Ogun

Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 33-year-old lady, who sold her 18-month-old baby for the sum of N600,000 to enable her repay “an embarrassing” bank loan.
The lady, identified as Olaide Adekunle, allegedly travelled to Lagos State on March 15, 2023 where she started hawking sachet water for the possibility of raising enough money to offset the debt she was owing a microfinance bank.

LEADERSHIP gathered that when Olaide could not raise the desired fund, she opted to selling her baby, Moridiat Rasaq, to a yet-to-be identified woman without the consent of her husband.

The Police Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said Olaide was arrested following a report lodged with the police at the Sango Ota Divisional headquarters by her husband, Nureni Rasaq.

Oyeyemi explained that confessional statement obtained by the police from the suspect indicated that Olaide, while hawking sachet water in Lagos met a man who introduced her to the woman that eventually bought the child from her.

The PPRO, however, disclosed that the acting Commissioner of Police in the state, Babakura Muhammed, has directed that the suspect be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) for further investigation and possible recovery of the baby

2023 Census: Adhoc Staff Protest Non-Payment Of Allowances

About 467 adhoc staff of the National Population Commission (NPC) in Bauchi State have taken to the streets to protest the non-payment of their allowances.

The protest was carried out on Wunti Street in Bauchi metropolis on Tuesday.

The adhoc staffers carried placards with inscriptions such as “No pay, no work,” and “We demand our allowances from NPC office”.

The Spokesman of the ad-hoc staffers, Mr Abbas Adamu, while addressing the state Director of the NPC and staff in Bauchi, said: “We have done our job but yet to receive our due allowances.

“On behalf of the Ad-hoc NPC 2023 Census staff who participated as special work force and facilitators for the upcoming 2023 census exercise.

“We are here to inform the Commission that we in the attached list have not received our training allowances which were conducted at Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, centres from Jan. 23 to Feb. 5 for Special work force and facilitators respectively,”
 he said.

According to him, several appeals have been made to the state office of the NPC to pay for the omitted facilitators and special work force trainees, but the response has not been encouraging.

“We protest and present a letter to the office to demand for payment of our allowances within seven days from the date of the receipt of this letter,” he said.

NAN recalls that the protesting ad-hoc staffers were hired by NPC to provide support for the 2023 census exercise in the state.

Responding, Mr Hudu Baballe, the state Director NPC, lauded the ad-hoc staffers for carrying out the protest in a simple and non-violence manner.

“I have listened to all your grievances and complaints and they are all noted. I have gotten the letter which would be forwarded to the Commissioner and the National Headquarters in Abuja,” he said.

Baballe enjoined the aggrieved ad-hoc staff to remain calm as the commission would do everything possible to look into their plight.

3 Nigerian Banks Change Their Names; Sterling Splits Into 2

Nigerian banks are repositioning for more significant impacts, better product offerings, and higher returns on investment.

Apart from announcing several changes, the banks moved to solidify their leadership positions by changing names, branding, and operational structures.

Nigerian banks seek new frontiers and new profits

Earlier in March, one of Nigeria’s leading banks, Zenith Bank, announced that it was rebranding into a Holding Company known as Zenith Holding Co.

The bank said the move is to reposition it to compete favorably in the industry and serve its customers better.

Zenith Bank said it had received approval in principle from the Central Bank of Nigeria to restructure and operate as a financial holding company.

The company revealed plans to change its organizational structure in a statement signed by the Company Secretary, Michael Otu, on Friday, March 3, 2023, and submitted to the Nigerian Exchange.

With this change, the organization will have a banking subsidiary and other subsidiaries in the financial services sector.

Sterling Bank joins the fray, splits into two

In April, Sterling Bank Plc announced that it had completed an essential step in its ongoing efforts to shift from a financial institution to a holding company. The bank said the move is in line with the delisting, transfer, and relisting of all shares to the Sterling Financial Holding Company on the floor of the Nigerian Exchange.

Per a statement by the firm, the relisting shows another significant development in the ongoing transition, which the bank’s shareholders unanimously approve. As ratified by the Nigerian Exchange, the bank stated that this move follows approval in principle for it to operate as a Holding Company by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The bank will convert to a non-operating financial holding firm as approved by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and is expected to enable it to diversify its investment portfolio, expanding its presence in the financial markets.

Punch reports that upon completion of the transition, Sterling Holdings Company would begin operations with two banking subsidiaries, one operating as a conventional commercial bank and the other as the Alternative Bank Limited, which will operate as a non-interest bank.

First Bank changes name

And most recently, Nigeria’s oldest bank, First Bank, announced a corporate name change for its African subsidiaries. According to a statement by the bank, the name change aligns with the subsidiaries of the parent brand and enjoys the strong heritage and brand equity built by FirstBank Nigeria in its 129 years of existence and industry leadership.

Punch reports that the name change affects its operations in several African countries where it has its presence. The bank named the first set of subsidiaries affecting the name alignment as FBNBank UK, FBNBank Sierra Leone, FBNBank Gambia, and FBNBank DRC

Per the statement, the subsidiaries would be addressed as FirstBank UK, FirstBank Sierra Leon, FirstBank Gambia, and FirstBank DRC. While the banks’ change of names does not affect their core operations and responsibilities, it will affect public perceptions and customers’ acceptance.

The banks joined other banks that have significantly rebranded and repositioned in Nigeria.
