Place Osinbajo Against Orji Uzor Kalu - Peter P'Square Tackles Tribalism

2023 Elections: “Try Placing Yemi Osinbajo Against Orji Uzor Kalu,” Peter Psquare Tackles Political Tribalism

Popular Nigerian singer Peter Psquare Okoye wanted his fans and followers to know that the forthcoming elections should not be handled with tribalism The Afrobeats star openly declared that he was not supporting Peter Obi based on the fact that he is an Igbo man like him Peter backed his assertion by giving an analogy with Yemi Osinbajo and Orji Uzor Klau

Peter Okoye, one of the singers from the famous Afrobeats duo Psquare, has tried to make clear his reason for supporting Peter Obi in the forthcoming elections. The "Do Me" singer and his brother have been vocal supporters of the Labour Party's presidential candidate, fueling speculation about tribalism and favouritism.

Peter shed more light on why he picked Obi as his presidential candidate while making himself a reference point for other Igbo individuals who are rooting for the Anambra state ex-governor.

If you think I am supporting Peter Obi because he is Igbo, try replacing him with Yemi Osibanjo against Orji Uzo Kalu and see if myself and Igbos won’t massively vote for Yemi Osibanjo.

Police Arrest Yetunde Akilapa For Burglary A Seventh Time

Yoruba actress, Yetunde Akilapa has been arrested for burglary the seventh time.

Ms Akilapa came into the film industry in 2013 and acted in a Yoruba film, “Ileri-Oluwa’’, which shot her to the limelight.

She has been featured in other Yoruba movies. The actress was earlier reported to be in the news for stealing and breaking into people’s homes years ago and was once on the police wanted list.

The actress, notorious for breaking into houses and stores to steal, was arrested Thursday after the homeowner caught her in the act.

A Twitter user, @LotsofKory said that she entered her house and found a woman inside, stealing her valuables.

“That was how I entered my house today o, and I found a woman inside my house. She had packed my wigs and all my gold. I (she) was about to start checking my bags when I entered.

“Thank God my neighbour was coming behind me; I’m pretty sure she’d have attacked me.”

She further said that a pair of her gold earrings had been taken to the police station.

Before that, in February 2013, it was reported that police arrested the actress in Alade, Somolu area of Lagos, on charges of robbery.

She was sent to the Kirikiri correctional facility. In November 2013, she regained freedom.

Serial offender

It is not the first time Ms Akilapa has been arrested for burglary.

In 2018, she was arrested for trying to gain unlawful access to a house in Magodo Shangisha, Lagos.

A video of her being apprehended made the rounds on social media.

In June 2018, she was brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court and charged with break-in and stealing valuables worth N7 million from a home.

The 37-year-old actress was tried on a three-count charge bordering on burglary and stealing, to which she pleaded not guilty.

Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi told the court that the accused committed the offences on 27 June at No. 14/16, Mutairu St., Shangisha, Ketu, a suburb of Lagos, at 2.10 p.m.

According to him, the accused was apprehended while trying to enter the apartment of the complainant, Adeboye Lamidi.

Mr Lamidi alleged that he was in his sitting room when he noticed someone was trying to open the door to his apartment with a key from outside.

Ms Akilapa used a different key to unlock the door of the complainant’s house but was caught in the act, he said.

“l peeped through the door hole, and l saw the accused trying to open my door with a key.”

The prosecutor also alleged that the accused, on 16 November 2015 at 3.00 p.m., broke into the residence of Oyinlola Tuga by unlocking the door with a master key.

Tuga, who lives at No. 39A, Ayodele Okeowo St., Gbagada Soluyi in Lagos, reported that the accused stole jewellery, bags and other valuables worth N7 million.

“Tuga alleged that after raising the alarm that his house had been burgled, his neighbours told him that they saw the accused parked her car with registration no. MUS 689 CZ in front of the complainant’s house.

“They challenged her and found the stolen items and a hundred bunch of keys on her.

“The accused was apprehended and handed over to the police at Ifako police station,” he said.

More offences

The actress was in the news in February 2013 when it was reported that she was arrested for robbery by the police in Alade, Somolu area of Lagos.

She was sent to the Kirikiri Prison, and after a few months, she regained her freedom in November 2013.

On 12 January 2014, she was again caught trying to steal with a bunch of master keys hidden in her brassiere at a house in Magodo Phase 2.

The offences contravene Sections 287, 307 and 308 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

Section 287 stipulates a three-year jail term for stealing, while Section 307 prescribes seven years for burglary.

The Magistrate, Olufunke Sule-Amzat, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two responsible sureties.

Mrs Sule-Amzat said the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Fani-kayode Hospitalised After DSS Grilling, Says Lawyer

The forgery trial of a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, before the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja was stalled on Monday as the ex-minister was absent from court.

He is standing trial over the alleged use of false documents, fabricated evidence and procuring execution of documents before an Ikeja Special Offences Court.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is prosecuting Fani-Kayode on 12 counts, in which he was accused of tendering forged medical report before Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court in Lagos, where he is being prosecuted for alleged N4.9bn fraud.

At the resumed hearing of the matter on Monday, the defendant’s counsel, Wale Balogun, informed the court that Fani-Kayode was not in court.

We regret to announce to your lordship that the defendant is not in court due to health reasons, and secondly due to a running battle he has with both the DSS and the police.”

Balogun informed the court that since the last time we were here, the defendant has been reporting every day at the DSS, and while he was doing this, the Nigeria Police invited him” for questioning with regards to some comments Fani-Kayode made online.

“Since we left here at the last date, he has not been able to have peace of mind, and that has affected his health.

On the 16th, he was at the hospital and on Saturday he was also readmitted at the National Hospital.

“Even now as we speak,
he is also there, and based on this it has become imperative to seek your lordship’s indulgence not only to vacate today, but the other days, 21 and 22.

“We humbly apply that those days be vacated to enable him resolve those issues.”

The lawyer said he had shared some documents with the prosecution in that regard.

Responding, the EFCC prosecuting counsel, Bilikisu Buhari, said, “The defence counsel this morning, shared with us two documents; one is a medical report and another from the Nigeria Police.

“In the circumstance, we leave the decision to the discretion of the court.”

The defendant who was arraigned in December 17, 2021, pleaded not guilty to the charge against him.

After listening to the lawyers, Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe, adjourned the case till May 24 and 25 for continuation of trial.

Lagos Transport Plans Stand, Oluomo Not Involved — REC

Justice Chukwuejekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission from engaging the Lagos State Parks Management Committee, or any of its commercial bus drivers in the distribution of election materials for the February 25 and March 11 polls.

The Lagos State Parks Management Committee is headed by transport union leader, Musiliu Akinsanya, alias MC Oluomo, who is an ally of the ruling All Progressives Congress in Lagos State.

Justice Aneke’s restraining order on Monday followed an application for interlocutory injunction filed by Labour Party, African Democratic Congress and Boot Party.

The parties filed the suit, marked FHC/L/CS/271/2023, alongside their governorship candidates in Lagos – Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (LP); Funsho Doherty (ADC); and Wale Oluwo (Boot Party).

INEC is the sole defendant in the suit. The judge granted the interim interlocutory injunction after listening to the plaintiffs’ lawyer, Abass Ibrahim.

In the affidavit filed in support of the application, the lawyer averred that the Lagos State Government, in April 2022, abolished the activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in the state.

In place of the NURTW, of which MC Oluomo was a chieftain, the state government set up the Lagos State Parks Management Committee to oversee the affairs of commercial bus drivers, motor parks and garages in the state.

He said prior to April 2022, the NURTW was the major controller and manager of Lagos State commercial bus drivers, garages and motor parks.

The lawyer stated that upon establishment of the Lagos State Parks Management Committee, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, “appointed a popular thug, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, who is a strong supporter of the APC, the APC governorship candidate in Lagos and the APC presidential candidate, as the chairman of the committee.”

The deponent stated that he was aware that on January 12, 2023, the MC Oluomo-led Lagos State Parks Management Committee wrote to INEC to offer logistics solutions in the distribution of election materials and personnel in Lagos State.

“The letter was received by the defendant on January 16, 2023 and it was reported in the national dailies that the defendant had appointed the Musiliu Akinsanya popularly known as MC Oluomo-led Lagos State Parks Management Committee to distribute election materials and personnel in Lagos.

“On Tuesday, February 7, 2023, Mr Olusegun Agbaje, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Lagos State, confirmed, during the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security meeting at INEC, that they had no choice but to work with the MC Oluomo-led Lagos State Parks Management Committee.”

The deponent said he knew that MC Oluomo is a card-carrying member of the APC and a strong supporter of the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

According to him, MC Oluomo was once quoted as saying: “I am an Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Jagaban’s loyalist, I wear the Jagaban jersey; I’ve been a loyalist since 1999.”

He said his clients had fears that if INEC used the MC Oluomo-led committee to distribute election materials, the elections would be manipulated in favour of the APC.

In a ruling, Justice Aneke said,“I have listened to the submission of counsel and also perused the motion with affidavit of urgency and grounds for the application. I found merit in the application. The order of interlocutory injunction is hereby granted.”

The judge adjourned the hearing of the substantive suit to February 22, and also ordered that all the processes in the suit be served on INEC.

The judge also ordered that hearing notice be issued and served on the INEC.

But reacting to the ruling, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Lagos, Olusegun Agbaje, told one of our correspondents that he was not aware of the lawsuit as he hadn’t been served.

He added, “Nobody is dealing with Oluomo here. I said it several times. We are not dealing with Oluomo. The owners of the vehicles are at the local government level. Anybody who says we are dealing with Oluomo should provide the evidence. And we don’t have any problem with mobilisation in Lagos State.

“We don’t have any challenge at all in INEC Lagos State. All the arrangement is going on smoothly. We are not aware of any court judgment because nobody served us any court papers. The issue of Oluomo does not arise in the first instance. We are going on with our arrangement and we don’t have anything to fear.”
