Naira Scarcity: Protesters Hit Sagamu, Raze Banks, INEC, IBEDC Offices

Protesters, yesterday, stormed major streets of Sagamu, Ogun State, to express their anger and displeasure over the hardship experienced as a result of the scarcity of naira notes.

They barricaded the Ijebu-Ode/Sagamu Interchange section of the Lagos-Sagamu-Benin Expressway with bonfires, leading to traffic gridlock which left hundreds of travelers stranded for hours.

The mob, made up mostly of youths, also torched two banks and the offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and set ablaze equipment such as computers, TV sets, furniture, industrial generator, among others. They also vandalized the Sagamu LGA Secretariat office.

The two banks burnt were branches of Keystone Bank and Union Bank located at Ijoku Area while other banks were also attacked.

Daily Sun learnt the protest began in front of the Palace of the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi and later spread to other parts of the town. But a youth leader, Kayode Segun-Okeowo, described the act as a motivated destruction and not a protest.

I’m a comrade and understand the ABC of protest. It’s motivated to cause destruction. Those behind this must stop,” he said in a telephone interview.

Opposition behind unrest

Ogun State Government described the violent protests as politically motivated.

A statement by the governor’s media aide, Kunle Somorin, claimed some disgruntled members and candidates of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were sighted leading the demonstration.

While the protests were purportedly against the scarcity of naira notes, the real intention of these elements became obvious with the involvement of known PDP members. It is on record that the campaign tour of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which moved through Simawa to Ogijo and back to Sagamu, where two roads were commissioned yesterday, ended without any hitch. The APC rally was attended by tens of thousands of people at different locations, lasting from about 8am in the morning to 8pm without any violence, quarrels or disagreements whatsoever. We believe strongly that it was the success of the APC rally of yesterday that got the feeble opposition PDP frustrated and, therefore, made their members embark on the mindless destruction of properties.

“The governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, has been on top of the fallouts of the naira re-design issues. The governor had visited the Central Bank headquarters in Abeokuta and some other commercial banks’ branches, made a state broadcast and empathised with the people with reassurance that efforts are on to ameliorate the negative impacts of the controversial policy on the people. Ogun State is also one of the states that has taken the Federal Government to court on the naira swap policy.”

He said arrests have been made by the police.

“The full wrath of the law will be made to bear on the culprits, no matter who their sponsors are,” he said.

Allegations spurious – PDP

Reacting, the state Chairman of the PDP, Sikirulahi Ogundele, said the outburst of the state government showed its sense of irresponsibility and insensitivity to the plight of the people.

Ogundele, who expressed disappointment over what he described as “spurious allegations” from the ruling party, added that the APC has failed Nigerians and the people were only reacting out of frustration.

“The ruling party has failed the people and they are now reacting to the untoward hardship its policies had brought on them. Can they say that PDP was behind the protests in Oyo, Ondo and other states? Nigerians are just reacting but instead of the ruling party to own up to Nigerians that their policies have brought hardship and pains on them, they are busy shifting blame on the opposition party. For the records, PDP has nothing to do with the protests in Sagamu or anywhere in the state. Let them go and check themselves. They are disconnected from the people. They should not put their failure on the PDP. They are disorganised and it is rubbing off on their faces now that people are ready to vote them out of office, starting from this Saturday,” he said.

30 suspects arrested

The police confirmed that no fewer than 30 persons have been arrested in connection with the violent protests.

According to the police spokesperson in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the arrested persons have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department on the order of the Commissioner of Police, Frank Mba.

Oyeyemi added that the combined team of policemen and military men were on the ground to monitor the situation.

Meanwhile, the Akarigbo of Remo, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, has sued for calm.

A statement signed by the monarch read: “I appeal to all to remain calm and peaceful as we continue to engage the Federal Government. This policy is not from the state or local government. Therefore, the destruction of lives and properties will only compound an already bad situation. I urge our people to continue to accept the old notes in line with the Supreme Court ruling. No person who accepts the old notes would lose out. I can assure you of that, and please hold on to that promise. Further, I am also mandating all our market people to continue to accept the old notes. I hereby undertake that no one will lose out for possessing the old notes.”

A bus conveying Madonna students home crashed and caught fire, leading to the death of at least 8 students, IGBERETV reports.

The accident occurred at TTC/Special Science School junction along the trans-Saharan road in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State.

The occupants of the bus were said to be traveling from Port Harcourt to Taraba State when they crashed on the evening of Saturday, February, 18.

The students were returning home ahead of the upcoming general elections. One of the victims has been identified as Grace Usman Ezra.

Photos from the scene show the charred remains of victims sticking out of the burnt bus.

A hospital staff took to Twitter to reveal that many of the victims are in the burns unit or the Accident and Emergency unit at the Alex Ekwueme Teaching Hospital and they are “all in pains.”

2023: Nobody Should Annoy Me, Cast Your Vote – Falz

Nigerian rapper and activist, Folarin Falana, AKA Falz, has urged the youths to vote in Saturday’s presidential election.

Falz in a video on his Instagram page on Sunday, called on Nigerians not to make any excuse for not voting.

According to him, it is time for the youths to decide their future.

He said, “Oya election don come oooo this is my PVC, I’m sure you have yours and you are ready to vote. I don’t want to hear any of that rubbish that my vote will not count, so what’s the point of voting?

“Oh God, please nobody should annoy me; this is 2023, with everything we’re going through, if there are still some people saying that, then really and truly I don’t know what is wrong with them.”

Falz, who urged Nigerians to vote against bad leadership, noted that the Labour Party movement has grown to become a formidable third force within a short time.

”Forget about all those pessimists, all those cynics that are coming to you, all those irresponsible people that apparently love to suffer and want to keep this status quo, forget about those people and just focus on the goal,”he said.

He added that the goal in 2023 is that the people have decided that they will choose who rules them.

The main contenders of Saturday’s Presidential election are the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Labour Party, LP and the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP.

Fadeyi Oloro Faces Eviction From Lagos Home, Solicits Financial Support

Veteran Yoruba actor Ojo Arowosafe, popularly known as Fadeyi Oloro, is in dire straits as his landlord has given him a six months quit notice from the building he presently occupies.

Mr Arowosafe, who played Fadeyi Oloro in a Yoruba TV series titled ‘Arelu’ in the 80s, has been ill for over three years.

His daughter, who joined an Instagram live session with popular OAP Daddy Freeze on Thursday night, shared details of her father’s predicament. She revealed that her father’s landlord served them an eviction notice for failing to pay his rent, the amount she did not specify.

She said in January, doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan diagnosed her dad with kidney-related ailments, among other things.

In December 2021, in an interview with PREMIUM TIMES, the actor cried out to Nigerians seeking financial assistance amidst health challenges.

Health, other challenges

Also in the session was Sunday Ajana, a staff of TVC Communications who reported about the actor a month ago.

He said that after the report, he was fortunate to get a call from a medical doctor in UCH who offered to render medical assistance.

‘‘The doctor conducted some medical tests. Baba complained about the swelling of his legs. He has had that issue for about three years.

About two years ago, he went to TB Joshua but still experienced a little pain.

‘‘The doctor told us that the kidney-related issues stem from the excessive use of traditional herbs, popularly known as agbo. So he recommended certain drugs. Now he is being treated for that,” he said.

Reprieve

Meanwhile, reprieve appears to have come the way of the veteran actor as a London-based preacher, Tobi Adegboyega, donated the sum of N3m towards completing the actor’s building project.

Daddy Freeze earlier pledged on behalf of the members of his group, the Free Nation Church, to raise the sum of N3m to assist in completing the veteran actor’s building project.

Midway through the interview session, Pastor Adegboyega, the founder of Salvation Proclaimers Anointed Church (SPAC Nation), joined the live stream where he extolled the life and times of the veteran actor.

He said, “I was young, but we all watched Baba Fedeyi Oloro growing up. He is one of our legends in Africa and Baba, and we wave; we thank you for the great work you’ve done to promote Nigeria and Africa.

“We are proud of you. I will give you N3m to give Baba. Daddy Freeze, thank you for this. Thank you for celebrating. It’s very heartwarming, I must say. I pray that we will have a country that will celebrate our people, that celebrate our legends and keeps them good. It’s sad to see how Nigeria treats its legends in sports.”

Background

Born September 15, 1957, in Ekiti State, Nigeria, Mr Arowosafe is an actor and producer.

Fadeyi has starred in many Yoruba movies like, ‘Alagbara Ilu’, ‘Jagun Ina’, ‘Inu Bibi’, ‘IJA Abija’, ‘Osimi Ika’, ‘Adani Lori’, ‘Fitu Fona’, ‘Ruke Rudo’,’ Bola Ele’, ‘Ade Ogun’ and many others.

Buhari’s Tenure Ends In 98 Days

IN line with the provision of Nigeria’s Constitution, President Muhammadu Buhari will end his second and final term in office on May 29, which is 100 days from today.

Buhari assumed office on May 29, 2015, after defeating the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, who sought re-election for a second term.

He is the country’s eighth and 16th leader (military Head of State between December 31, 1983 and August 27, 1985, and as elected president between May 29, 2015 and May 29, 2023).

The president rode to office on his pledge to tackle insecurity and corruption, and revamp the economy.

The ICIR reports that Buhari inherited a nation battered by insecurity and widespread corruption.

Failure of Jonathan’s government to contain deadly attacks in the North, including Abuja, Kano, and the North-East by the Boko Haram belligerent group, made Nigerians prefer Buhari.

As a former Head of State, many citizens believed he possessed the requisite pedigree to tackle the insurgency and other festering menaces in the country better than Jonathan, branded by many as “clueless.”

Waning popularity
The ICIR reports that given the country’s multidimensional and worsening insecurity, unprecedented division and hardship faced by most citizens under Buhari’s watch, the president’s popularity has dwindled, especially in the North, where he was much loved.

In January 2023, protesters barricaded roads in Kano State and reportedly stoned the president’s helicopter when taking off from the state to Abuja after an official visit. Kano is the hub of socio-economic activities in northern Nigeria.

There had been similar protests before and after the Kano rage.

In October 2020, Nigerians protested the brutality of a department of the Nigeria Police Force – the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The protest snowballed into wanton killings, destruction, and looting of public and private property across the country.

The most significant episode of the killings was those reportedly carried out by the military at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos State.

In October 2022, the Central Bank of Nigeria announced the government’s decision to make the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes cease to be legal tender.

The apex bank was to introduce new notes replacing the old ones on December 15 of that year.

Introducing the notes has, however, brought hardship to Nigerians because the new notes are very few in circulation.

The ICIR reported some of the pains Nigerians face in their bid to get the cash.

Protests have erupted in Lagos, Delta, Ondo, Oyo and other southern states, a few days to the 2023 general elections, scheduled for Saturday, February 25.

Besides, many lawyers believe the Buhari-led government’s insistence on implementing the policy has put the president in contempt of the Supreme Court, which ordered that the old notes co-exist with the new ones in the interim.

My Decision To Close Land Borders Was Appreciated By Nigerians — Buhari
