Bandits Reject 5.3m Old Naira Notes In Kaduna Over Deadline

City & Crime learnt that the leader of the bandits, who raided Azara, Janjala and Kadara communities in Kaduna State on December 12, 2022, and kidnapped 37 people, asked the relatives of the victims to return the old naira notes when they brought them for ransom payment.

Instead, he ordered for foodstuff, drugs and wine before freeing two nursing mothers and three men among the abducted 11 people from Azara community in Kachia LGA.

A relative to one of the victims, Haruna Shuaibu, confirmed the release of the two women and three men through a telephone chat with our reporter on Wednesday.

He explained that family members and relatives of the victims raised N5.3m for the bandits, but that money was rejected by their leader when he discovered that it was in old naira notes.

He said, “Last week the families and relatives of the victims struggled to raise the ransom. And upon taking the ransom to them, their leader rejected it, saying it was in old naira notes which would soon cease to be legal tender and ordered that the family should use the money to buy foodstuff and drugs for them.”

He further said that the relatives returned with the money and bought foodstuff, hard drugs and cartons of wine before some of them were set free on Saturday.

Shuaibu added that the remaining victims were still in captivity as the bandits had insisted on collecting new naira notes from their family members.

There was no response from the spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command over the development.

I’ll Make Fuel N100 In Six Months If Elected – ZLP Pres. Candidate Dan Nwanyanwu

Presidential candidate of the Zenith Labour Party, ZLP, Dan Nwanyanwu promised to reduce the price of fuel to N100 per litre within six months if elected as the president of Nigeria.

Nwanyanwu made this promise in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday.

He said, “Within six months, I will fuel for N100 in this country. I have calculated it, all these refineries will be put to use within three to four months. At the same time we are going to install model refineries in each geopolitical zone.

“We have the resources get this things done. It’s the political will. If people are benefiting from a system they will not allow it to go. But, I will get it done.

“This idea of subsidy is created. What are subsidizing? You’re not ashamed as a country, you’re not ashamed a nation that your product is thrown somewhere and they will bring back just three items – petrol, kerosene and diesel.

“They take it away and we don’t talk about it. I won’t let that happen under my nose.

These my colleagues are involved in these deals. They cannot do it. I have nothing attached to me in relation to the perennial problems we are passing through today.

“Somebody importing generates for example, will not give you electricity. Somebody involved in oil bunkering will not allow the refineries to work. He will want the fuel to be sold at N1000,” he said.

Asked if would make himself the country’s Petroleum Minister, Nwanyanwu simply said, “No no no, I don’t have to be. If he (Petroleum Minister) doesn’t work i will fire him. I will fire you don’t work. I will give you my template. I want fuel to be sold in six months these are my ideas get it done for N100.”

Nwanyanwu Dan expressed worry over what Nigerians are benefiting from the country.

He said, “Tell me what Nigerians are benefiting from this country. Nothing. Nigerians should take me by my word. Within six months it will start dropping from day one until I get there.

On the global petroleum control and indices, Nwanyanwu said, “Why can you price petrol at the rate of dollar? That’s voodoo economics. They are pricing it at rate of dollar and Nigerians pay in dollars. Are Nigerians and Nigerian workers paid in dollars.

“We belong to OPEC and that’s why we should produce what we use and use what we produce. Why must you take crude out when you can refine it, why? They are charging you based on the rate of exchange and they are the ones manipulating it. My colleagues can not do it. I am the only that has the political will to change this system,” he added.

Naira Redesign: Tinubu Behind Plot To Remove Emefiele, Says Atiku Campaign

The Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Organisation on Wednesday said Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is the one behind the plot to remove the governor Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

Tinubu during his rally in Abeokuta, Ogun state today specifically said the fuel crisis and the scarcity of the redesigned naira notes were artificially created to discourage people from voting for the APC and sabotage his election.

Tinubu said, “We will use our PVCs to take over government from them, if they like let them create fuel crisis, even if they said there is no fuel, we will trek to vote. They are full of mischief, they could say there is no fuel. They have been scheming to create fuel crisis, but forget about it. Relax, I Asiwaju have told you that the issue of fuel supply will be permanently addressed”.

But speaking with DAILY INDEPENDENT, Daniel Bwala, a spokesperson of the Atiku campaign said Tinubu’s statement has exposed him as the one behind the plot to arrest the CBN governor and extend the deadline given for the usage of the old notes.

“Tinubu has finally confirmed that all along he has been the one behind the plot to sack the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele. We have been wondering why they have been making several efforts to remove the CBN governor because he said there is no going back on the deadline for usage of old currency”.

“Every right thinking member of the society knows that one of the innovation of the Electoral reforms that all of us crave was the idea of stopping vote buying. Politicians oftentimes use money to buy votes, thereby inducing the people and the wishes of the people will not reflect in elections”.

“The Naira redesign has no correlation with the sabotaging of the election because ample time, which is one month was given to people to return the old notes”.

“From the statement of Tinubu today, there is every reason to believe that he stacked money somewhere that he wanted to use in this election, but this naira redesign will not allow him to bring the money into the system and get the new notes because the redesigned money are not equal to the number or volumes of money that are supposed to come back into the system” Bwala said.
