My Decision To Close Land Borders Was Appreciated By Nigerians — Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari says he closed the country’s land borders to encourage Nigerians to produce food for their consumption.

He said although the move was initially criticised, Nigerians eventually appreciated it.

Buhari spoke on Tuesday while inaugurating the new customs headquarters that reportedly cost N19.6 billion to construct.

The edifice is located in the Maitama district of the federal capital territory (FCT).

Please note that from Lake Chad to Benin Republic is more than 1,600 kilometres, only God can effectively guard the borders. So you need a person who has the energy and the competence to supervise. I deliberately closed the borders because knowing Nigerians, they order rice, give some to Niger and the rest, and then they bring the rice here,” he said.

“With our potential, we have people, we have land, and weather – how many nations are as lucky as Nigeria in the world, very few nations.

“So closing that border, 1,600 kilometres, Nigerians insist they eat boiled rice – you eat what you grow or you die. I tried to make my point and later Nigerians appreciated it.”

Buhari said he nominated Hameed Ali as comptroller-general of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) because of his experience and competence.

The president said the late Sani Abacha, a former military head of state, gave Ali “problematic” tasks to accomplish.

“As for Hameed Ali, I asked him to be in charge of customs. No matter what people say about the late Sani Abacha, may his soul rest in peace,” he said.

“I knew him very well, when somehow he became president of this country, head of state, the biggest problematic area was around Kaduna. He picked Colonel Hameed Ali and dumped the problems on him. My decision for Hameed Ali to come to customs was a deliberate one.

“[I brought] Colonel Hameed Ali to ensure that I have peace of mind.”

On his part, Ali said the increase in the salaries of customs personnel has made them less susceptible to corruption.

“We must mention the game-changing intervention of Mr President to rid the NCS of corruption and put it on a path of integrity,” the comptroller-general said.

“The 100 percent increase in the remuneration for officers and men of the service decisively made them less susceptible to corruption.”

Seun Kuti Sent Back To Prison As Court Adjourns Assault Case Hearing

Embattled Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, was returned to a prison cell on Tuesday morning after his trial for assaulting a police officer was adjourned.

Naija News understands that the Chief Magistrates Court in Yaba, Lagos State, presided over by Adeola Olatubosun, adjourned Seun’s trial after the magistrate absented herself from the court.

“Seun has been taken back to the state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti,” SaharaReporters quoted a source at the court saying.

The source disclosed that the court sitting has been adjourned till Wednesday, May 23, 2023.

It was reported earlier that the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State command, was plotting to ensure that Kuti was taken to the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, to certify that he is “mentally sick.”

Seun was said to have refused to give out his blood samples to the police for medical examination after the command got the magistrate to amend her ruling and do their bidding.

“The police are trying to take the Afrobeat musician to the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State to declare him mentally sick. You can imagine what that can cause his musical career in Nigeria and abroad,” a source said on Monday.

Naija News recalls that Chief Magistrate Olatubosun had granted the police’s application for an extension of Seun Kuti’s remand for an additional four days.

Seun was on May 3 charged with assaulting a police officer on Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge. According to the documents attached, the application was moved by Simon Lough (SAN), who led a police legal team to court.

He said, “The extension is to allow further investigation into the case. We could not conclude investigation in 2 days, we now ask for extra 4 days to enable us to conclude the investigation.”

Buhari Commissions Second Niger Bridge

Second Niger Bridge named after Buhari

The president participated virtually in the commissioning of the bridge.

Governors of the south-east region of Nigeria have named the Second Niger Bridge after President Muhammadu Buhari, an official has said.

The bridge was commissioned on Tuesday by Mr Buhari who participated in the event virtually.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the governors took the decision ahead of the commissioning of the project to appreciate Mr Buhari for completing the project after successive administrations failed to do so.

“Following consultations, the governors of the South-east have agreed that the second Niger Bridge shall be named after the Muhammadu Buhari Second Niger Bridge,” Tolu Ogunlesi, a media aide to Mr Buhari posted on his verified Twitter handle on Tuesday.

Bashir Ahmad, a special assistant to the president on digital communications, also announced that the bridge has been named after Mr Buhari.

“The Second Niger Bridge is to be officially called/known as Muhammadu Buhari Second Niger Bridge,” Mr Ahmad wrote on his Twitter handle, Tuesday.

Ejimofor Opara, a media aide to Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State, told PREMIUM TIMES that Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Babatunde Fashola, announced the bridge’s new name during the commissioning of the project.

Mr Fashola also participated in the event virtually.

The minister, Mr Opara said, noted that the decision to rename the bridge after Mr Buhari was taken by the governors from the South-east.

The five governors include Mr Soludo (Anambra), Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi Enugu), Hope Uzodinma (Imo) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia).

The bridge

The construction of the new bridge began on 1st September 2018.

The bridge spans from Asaba in Delta State, south-south Nigeria to Ozubulu, Ogbaru and other communities in Anambra State, South-east Nigeria.

Newcastle Are Officially Qualified for Champions League

For Newcastle, the guarantee of at least six matches in the gilded and glitzy surrounds of the Champions League. And Leicester, the lingering threat of 46 amid the muck and nettles of the Championship.

Oh how different those eventualities are - executive airline travel versus a National Express motorway slog. But these are clubs heading in opposite directions. To think, when Leicester were winning the Premier League in 2016, Newcastle were being relegated.

Here, though, was a result that perhaps suited both teams. Needing only a point to secure a top-four finish, Newcastle would have preferred to sign off with a victory at St James' Park, especially with third position still up for grabs. But their supporters did not care for the outcome on 90 minutes, as they chorused about trips to Italy and beyond. Leicester, by contrast, are still hoping to avoid weekends in Swansea.

To that end, a gusty draw had some merit. It means, should they beat West Ham at home on Sunday, Everton must also win against Bournemouth to stay up at Leicester's expense. The odds, then, remain against Dean Smith and his players, but they're not nearly as long as they would have been had they lost this. It promises to be a nervy finale.

Not so for Newcastle. They will journey to Chelsea knowing the job is done. It is an incredible achievement, given Eddie Howe inherited a team 19th in the Premier League only 19 months ago. And it was his name they were singing throughout the second half as their European dream drew ever nearer.

A banner in the stands read - 'Hard work pays off. Dreams come true. Bad times don't last but legends do'. Howe has now elevated himself into the same conversation as the likes of Sir Bobby Robson, the manager who last took the club into the Champions League 20 years ago. And this, you feel, is only just the beginning.

Twenty minutes before kick-off, a supporter at the base of the steps leading into the Milburn Stand entrance, where thousands shuffle past en route to the turnstiles, played the Champions League theme on a speaker, loud enough for the masses to hum along. The stadium's main sound system will be playing that music two minutes before the off next season.

They will no doubt have to play better than this then, but Leicester also deserve credit for emerging with a result that could yet prove invaluable.

Smith's team-sheet read as much like a betting slip - to drop James Maddison and Harvey Barnes was certainly a gamble. There were two schools of thought as to why.

One being that to throw his cards in the air was better than holding on to a losing hand. The other, more sinister, was that players such as Maddison and Barnes may have something to gain from relegation. That is not to question their professionalism, but an unavoidable truth of a transfer being made easier in the event of going down. Given Newcastle retain an interest in both players, perhaps that was part of the manager's thinking.

In purely tactical terms, it looked like Smith was playing for a point, loading his defence with five men. After 45 minutes, they had kept a first-half clean sheet for the first time in 10 matches. They did not score. In fact, they did not have a shot, on or off target. Smith, though, would have been happy. He would have been even happier had Bruno Guimaraes been sent off in the ninth minute.

Newcastle would argue, with some justification, that VAR has not been kind to them this season. Well, here was a belated apology from the team at Stockley Park.

Guimaraes landed his studs on the knee of Boubakary Soumare, evoking memories of Paul Gascoigne on Garry Parker in the opening minutes of the 1991 FA Cup Final, an over-hyped star player. Like Gascoigne, Guimaraes should have seen red.

'That's a f***ing bad challenge, by the way' moaned Smith to the fourth official. He had understated it. But so, too, had the VAR officials, who failed to advise, at the very least, a pitchside review. There was a collective exhale inside St James' when play restarted - they knew the Brazilian had got away with one. But come half-time, Leicester had also ridden their luck.

Newcastle's shot count had tipped double figures and two of them - a Miguel Almiron volley and Callum Wilson poke - had hit the post. There was also a Wilson header cleared from the line by Wilfred Ndidi. The finishing, though, was generally poor from the home side, who had seen 82 per cent of the ball.

It was not until the 59th minute that Daniel Iversen had a save to make, and some stop it was too, fisting Alexander's Isak top-corner-bound steer over the crossbar.

By this point Maddison was on and soon Barnes and Patson Daka were joining him. Smith had kept the door closed for an hour, now he was loosening the hinges.

With the extra attacking personnel - and ambition - Leicester immediately won their first corner. But still Nick Pope, in the Newcastle goal, remained a spectator.

Iversen was too when Kieran Trippier's corner was headed beyond his grasp by defender Wout Faes and, at the far post, Guimaraes somehow contrived to nod against the post from barely a yard out.

It was that sort of night for Newcastle, not that it really mattered.

Tribunal To Deliver Judgement On PDP Suit Against Tinubu, Shettima On May 26

The supreme court has fixed May 26 to deliver judgment in a suit seeking the disqualification of Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima as presidential and vice- presidential candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The judgment will be delivered three days before the inauguration of the president-elect and the vice-president-elect.

The PDP, in the suit filed on July 28, 2022, claimed that Shettima’s nomination as Tinubu’s running mate was in breach of the provisions of sections 29(1), 33, 35, and 84(1)(2) of the electoral act, 2022.

The party argued that Shettima’s nomination to contest the position of vice-president and Borno central senatorial seat — at the same time — contravened the law.

The PDP, which sought an order disqualifying the APC, Tinubu, and Shettima from contesting the presidential election, also sought an order nullifying their candidacies.

However, Inyang Ekwo, the trial judge at the court of appeal, dismissed the suit on the grounds that the PDP lacked the locus standi to institute the suit.

Not satisfied, the PDP appealed the judgment.

a three-member panel of the court of appealDelivering judgment in the appeal, led by James Abundaga held that the PDP failed to establish that it had locus standi to institute the case.

Abundaga described the PDP as a “busybody”, who dabbled into issues that were internal affairs of the APC.

“The appellant, having failed to disclose its locus standi, this appeal fails and it is hereby dismissed,” he said.

The judge also awarded N5 million cost against the appellant’s lawyer, J. O. Olotu.

Jeff Bezos And Lauren Sanchez Are Engaged

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is engaged to his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, after nearly five years together, according to Page Six.

The outlet reported that rumors of the engagement have made the rounds for months after Sanchez was spotted wearing a heart-shaped ring. News that they began dating came in 2019 after Bezos' divorce from his wife Mackenzie Scott.

The pair were married for almost 24 years.

Bezos and Sanchez are in the South of France for the Cannes Film Festival and have been staying on his $500 million yacht that features a mermaid that looks similar to Sanchez adorning the prow.

Sanchez previously told The Wall Street Journal that Bezos "makes me laugh all the time. He can be goofy."

On his birthday, she wrote about Bezos in a lengthy social media post.

"They don’t see the man who puts everything aside to help a sick friend, but my eyes do," she said. "They don’t see the man who wakes up early every morning to make breakfast for the kids so they can laugh and talk about life and science and how to make this world a better place — my eyes do. They don’t see the man who wants everyone to feel joy, who’s heart is immeasurable and who’s ability to love is infinite".

Hilda Baci Defends Her Dress Sense, Hints On Next Steps

Popular chef and world record breaker, Hilda Baci, has appealed to Nigerians to see beyond her dressing but to project her ingenuity and doggedness to place Nigeria on the global map.

Baci said this in reaction to the wide criticisms of her dressing that erupted after her rise to fame for attempting to break the world record in cooking.

Recall that the 27-year-old chef came to the limelight following her attempt to break the world record by cooking continuously for 100 hours.

Afterwards, a number of her past pictures revealing her curves started surfacing on the Internet, a development which has since stirred mixed reactions on her personality traits.

The Akwa Ibom-born chef while addressing the media in Lagos on Thursday defended her dress -sense, saying that one can look sexy and still be a game changer.

She said, “I don’t have to be dressed like a nun to make it in life. One can be sexy and still amazing, beautiful, and smart. I shouldn’t be taken back because of my looks or dressing as this does not determine my values or endowment.”

The young chap pleaded with the society to allow young women look and become themselves without condemnation, adding that “I’ve volunteered myself to say I slay and I have something up in the brain.”

Baci, who still awaits her official validation by the Guinness Book of Records, expressed optimism about her confirmation, stressing that her record has been validated, while she only looks forward to her certificate.

“We complied with all the guidelines and never left any stone unturned. We didn’t fall short in any area and this is quite evident and clear. The cook-a-thon is a deliberate attempt and not a child’s play. Our preparations were robust, hence I don’t expect to be disappointed”

Revealing her next line of action, the world record breaker said she looked forward to propagating Nigerian recipes globally, expanding her restaurant and to enlarge the narratives of Nigerian Culinary space.

She disclosed however that embarking on her next step remained a source of anxiety for her.

She said, “By expanding my business, I want to create jobs and contribute meaningfully to the economy. I’m anticipating a situation where the earnings of chefs in Nigeria will be as competitive as employees in the oil company.

“I feel the culinary space is under-rated, I want to change the narratives. I intend to work with a lot of brands to add value to their customers and brands towards their sustainability.”

She also expressed gratitude to her team and Nigerian brands that stood by her to make the project a reality and worthwhile.

Love Doesn’t Dishonour Others To Make 1 Happy”- Davido’s Babymama Larissa Says

It seems like the recent birthday celebration of Chef Chi by ace singer Davido has stirred the emotions of his other babymamas including Larissa London

Larissa London, one of the baby mamas of ace Afrobeat singer, Davido stirred reactions online with some comments she shared on her page as she talks about her ideal man.

The makeup artist also talked about the type of man that is her perfect spec. Larrisa noted that she loves soft men, a proper lover boy ready to die for her.

Larissa also further talked about the different attributes of love and why it is wrong to dishonour other women to please another.

These statements come from the UK-based make-up artist just days after Davido went all out to celebrate Chioma on her 28-year-old birthday.

Larissa, in another comment, noted that love is patient and kind and does not envy nor boast. As she preached about love, Larissa also noted that love always protects, perseveres, gives hope, and does not delight in evil.

Just like Larissa, another of Davido’s baby mamas Sophia Momodu also reacted and shared a post on Instagram for the first time in a while, hours after the singer had celebrated Chef Chi and reassured her that his love for her was forever.

Plusvalenza: Italy's Appeal Court Hit Juve With 10-Point Deduction In Serie A

The old lady will host AC Milan at the Allianz Arena on Friday, before the last game of the season at the Stadio Friulli in Udine.

Juventus have been docked 10 points in a new ruling by the Italian football federation’s appeals court after an investigation into the club’s transfer dealings.

The decision sees Juventus drop from second place (69 points) to seventh in the Serie A (59 points), making it highly unlikely they will reach the Champions League.

Juventus were handed a 15-point penalty in January, while several members of its former board were also given bans from football activities, including former president Andrea Agnelli.

The points deduction was suspended last month on an appeal to the country’s highest sports court within the Italian Olympic Committee and referred back to the football federation’s appeals court for a new trial.

During a three-hour hearing on Monday, federation prosecutor Giuseppe Chiné requested an 11-point penalty for Juventus. He had asked for nine back in January. Chiné also requested eight-month bans for seven former Juventus directors, including Pavel Nedvěd, but they were cleared on Monday. Agnelli and three others had their appeals rejected last month.

The Juventus board resigned en masse in November following an investigation by Turin public prosecutors into alleged false bookkeeping. A trial was then re-opened based on information from the Turin prosecutors, leading to the points deduction. Juventus had initially been cleared by the sports court the previous April.

The prosecutors in Turin have also charged Juventus, Agnelli and 11 others with false communications by a company listed publicly on the Milan stock exchange, obstructing watchdog agencies, false billing and market manipulation.

Juventus’ legal troubles deepened still further last week after the Italian football federation also charged the club and seven former team directors with alleged fraud for the way they handled player salary cuts during the coronavirus pandemic.

Juventus reacts
Juventus Football Club takes note of what was decided by the FIGC Court of Appeal and reserves the right to read the reasons to evaluate a possible appeal to the Guarantee Board at CONI.

What was established by the fifth instance of judgment in this matter, which began more than a year ago, arouses great bitterness in the club and in its millions of supporters who, in the absence of clear rules, find themselves extremely penalised with the application of sanctions that seem to take into account the principle of proportionality.

While not ignoring the need for urgency, which Juventus has never shied away from during the proceedings, it is emphasised that these are facts that still have to be evaluated by a judge.

Re: Give Me Seven Weeks To Produce Witnesses, Obi Tells Tribunal - LP

Misquotation of Peter Obi/LP Legal Counsel by Punch Newspapers.

Our attention has been drawn to a misleading report in the Punch Newspaper @MobilePunch of 20th May 2023, captioned “Give me seven weeks to produce witnesses, Obi tells Tribunal” which is a misrepresentation of what our Counsel presented yesterday, before the Election Petition Tribunal.

Peter Obi did not ask the court to give him seven weeks to bring in his witnesses. He only implied he will be through with all 50 of them in seven weeks.

In proposing his schedule of witnesses, Eme Awa Kalu, SAN leading the team in court, had told the court that Peter Obi and Labour Party would be presenting 50 witnesses and that these 50 witnesses, will require 7 weeks to present their evidence before the Tribunal.

At no time did the Counsel say that he required ‘Seven weeks to produce witnesses’ as misreported by the Punch. The correct interpretation of what our lawyers told the court unambiguously is that the presentation of our witnesses, from start to finish, will take seven weeks. We are not asking the court to wait for seven weeks before we bring in the first witness as the Punch story tries to imply.

It is expected that every media house will assign competent reporters to cover this important case.
We expect the Punch Newspaper to immediately correct this misrepresentation with the same front page headline with which it was presented to the public.

Tinubu Cabinet: Muslims Lobby President-elect For More Ministers Than Christians

Cite Muslim majority in Taraba, Adamawa, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Kogi, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Niger, Kaduna, Kebbi, Lagos

•Reverse selves, want ‘top’, not ‘juicy’, job for El-Rufai

Indications emerged last week that the jostle for inclusion in the cabinet of the next federal administration had intensified as some Muslims pleaded with President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu to give more ministerial appointments to members of their own faith than their Christian counterparts.

They begged Tinubu to give Muslims in Muslim-majority states at least four ministerial appointments per geo-political zone after his inauguration.

There are six states in each of the six geo-political zones viz South-South, South-West, North-Central, North-East and North-West.
Only the South-East has five states.

The 1999 Constitution (as amended) provides that each of the 36 states of the federation must have one native in the federal cabinet.

Section 6, Part 1, Section 147 of the Constitution, titled, ‘Ministers of Federal Government’, says specifically: “3 – Any appointment under Subsection 2 by the President shall be in conformity with the provisions of Section 14 (3) of this Constitution: provided that in giving effect to the provisions aforesaid the President shall appoint at least one Minister from each state who shall be an indigene of such state”.

The implication of the Muslims’ lobby is that any geo-political zone where people of their own faith are in the majority, Muslims should have four Ministers in the Tinubu cabinet while Christians should be contented with two.

They listed affected states to include Taraba, Adamawa, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Kogi, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Niger, Kaduna, Kebbi and Lagos.

The lobby is coming on the heels of the controversy generated by the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which won the February 25, 2023 election.

Those in favour of the ticket had said what was important was the competence of the presidential candidate and his running mate while those in opposition said the development would embolden Muslim hardliners to try to Islamize the country.
Separately, the lobbyists made a case for a top job for the outgoing governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, in the Tinubu administration.

They initiatially wanted a ‘juicy job’ for the governor before changing their words to ‘top job’.

The Muslims, who spoke under the aegis of Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), made their case in a statement titled ‘MURIC to Tinubu: Give Muslims in Muslim-Majority States Four Ministers Each’

“As Nigeria warms up for the inauguration of a new administration under the able, tested and trusted leadership of President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we remind the incoming President and other Nigerians of past political marginalization of Muslims in Muslim-majority states since independence”, the statement signed by Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC Executive Director, said.

Marginalisation

Citing the marginalisation of Muslims in some parts of the country under successive administrations despite being in the majority and the opportunity the Tinubu presidency presents to redress the development, the statement said: “We are deeply disturbed that it is only in the core-North where we have states like Sokoto, Borno, Katsina, etc that the right of Muslims to be included in governance is respected.

“Former Christian military Heads of State and civilian Presidents have deliberately marooned Muslims from the political architecture of Muslim-majority states.

“Christians, who were appointed governors over Muslim-majority regions and states, were secretly given instructions to either turn or shake the demographic table in favour of Christianity. “Unfortunately this happened at a time when Muslims were still suffering from paucity of political consciousness in those regions and states.

“Examples of past denial of Muslims in participatory democracy can be found in the appointments of Col David Bamigboye as military governor of Kwara State, a predominantly Muslim-majority state (May 1967 – July 1975) by General Jack Gowon (rtd). Lt. Col. Francis Adekunle Fajuyi was also appointed military governor of the Western Region by General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi.

“The South-West had earlier been led mainly by Christian political leaders featuring Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola and Chief Victor Babaremilekun Adetokunbo Fani-Kayode. The Christianisation agenda of the South-West had also been championed by Christian military administrators and governors like Lt. Col. Robert Adeyinka Adebayo, Mobolaji Johnson, Christopher Oluwole Rotimi, Navy Cap Akintunde Aduwo, Col. David Jemibewon, etc.

“Obasanjo and Jonathan out-Heroded Herod. All the six Ministers appointed by them from the South-West were Christians and Muslims were totally excluded from federal appointments under them. Worse still, they appointed Christians as Ministers from core Muslim states like Bauchi, Kwara and Kaduna.

“This policy of total political blackout for Muslims in Muslim-majority states is contrary to the principles of participatory democracy. It is heartless political exclusion and the height of religious apartheid. We condemn it in the strongest terms.

“Therefore, as the new dawn of political inclusiveness promised by President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu approaches, we demand total departure from the past tortuous political marginalization of Muslims to complete political integration of Muslim citizens in all geo-political zones.

Demand

“In particular, MURIC demands at least four ministerial appointments each for competent Muslims out of the six ministers earmarked for every geopolitical zone where Muslims command majority after Tinubu’s inauguration. “We urge governors in Muslim-majority states to avoid marginalizing Muslims in nominations for ministerial posts.

“We refer specifically to states like Taraba, Adamawa, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Kogi, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Niger, Kaduna, Kebbi, Lagos, etc.

“Nigerian Muslims demand fair representation. We demand inclusiveness and full integration into the Nigerian political space. This is without prejudice to the preference for competence.

“The records set by Professor Ishaq Oloyede (JAMB Registrar) and Professor Isa Ali Pantami (Minister of Communications and Digital Economy) in office remain indubitable proof of hidden administrative icons among Nigerian Muslims although only unbiased Presidents and governors will find them.

“We are not asking Tinubu to sacrifice excellence on the altar of mediocrity. We have no scintilla of doubt that there are eminently qualified Muslims in all fields of human endeavour.

“We assert clearly, emphatically and categorically that failure to find suitable Muslims in any state of the federation for a ministerial appointment is like failure to find coal in Newcastle.

“Of course it is only logical that Ministers from states like Sokoto, Borno, Kano and Jigawa will all be Muslims while those from Enugu, Anambra, Rivers and Cross Rivers will be an all-Christian affair. The governors in those states may give one or two minorities appointments as commissioners and board members.”

‘Juicy’ post

In another statement titled, ‘El-Rufai Deserves Juicy Post’, the group hinged its position for a ‘juicy’ post for El-Rufai under the Tinubu administration on the role played by the Kaduna governor and eleven fellow governors from the North in ensuring that the South got the mandate during the APC presidential primary.

“As the days inch closer to the inauguration of the new administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Nigerian political spectrum has been inundated with power struggle intrigues and post allocation schemes. This is not new to us since we know that failure is an orphan but winners are always surrounded by all and sundry”, the statement said.

“However, we deem it germane to remind the president-elect of the need to pay debts owed and appreciate those who made his current status a fait accompli. This is important in order to start sowing the seed of success for the incoming administration as well as to secure a strong foothold for 2027.

“Gratitude is a major characteristic of a good Muslim. Allah says in the Glorious Qur’an, ‘If you are grateful, I will increase my favours on you…’ (Qur’an 14:7). If the president-elect shows appreciation to the ‘Noble Dozen’ from the North, he will enjoy more of their solidarity.

”It is noteworthy that the ‘Noble Dozen’ (i.e. the twelve governors who insisted that power must shift to the South) was led by Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State.

“There is no Nigerian who is unaware of the unique support and unequalled solidarity given by this northern group to the president-elect. El-Rufai in particular left his palatial office in Kaduna to spend days in Abuja.

“His contribution to our victory, the victory of the Muslim-Muslim ticket is unquantifiable. He became the mouthpiece of the Muslim-Muslim ticket camp, moving from one media house to another. We must not allow all these to go in vain”.

Apology

But in another statement about 24 hours later, entitled, MURIC Withdraws The Word ‘Juicy’, Replaces It With ‘Top’, Apologises, the group said: “Our attention has been drawn to the word ‘juicy’ used in yesterday’s statement as not being decent enough.

“In the statement, we canvassed for a top post to be given to Governor El-Rufai of Kaduna State in the incoming administration. We inadvertently used the word ‘juicy post’ instead of ‘top post’ It is not in our character to be insolent, loose or to use vulgar language.

“We hereby withdraw the word ‘juicy’ and replace it with the word ‘top’. We apologise to all those who might have taken note of the offensive word.”

Real Madrid's Match Vs Valencia Halted After Vinicius Jnr Racially Abused

Fans inside Valencia's Mestalla stadium were warned about racist behaviour, with their game against Real Madrid paused after abuse was allegedly directed at opposition forward Vinicius Junior.

The forward has been racially abused by fans in Spain this season, prompting strong criticism from others in the game. Back in February, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said "nothing in the world" could justify such abuse, expressing his shock at a line of questioning from one reporter.

The match was eventually restarted after a short delay, with Vinicius sent off in second-half stoppage time as Madrid fell to a 1-0 defeat. After the fixture, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti strongly condemned the lack of action being taken.

We have been complaining about this abuse all season and nothing!" Ancelotti told the media after his side's defeat "It has reached the point where the manager must consider taking off his player because the game is not being stopped. There is something wrong with this league if this happens.

According to The Athletic, a message was broadcast over the tannoy after the game was stopped. It reportedly said “racist behaviour from certain spectators would not be tolerated”.

"It wasn't the first time, nor the second, nor the third. Racism is normal in La Liga," the Brazil star wrote on Twitter, as translated by Goal. "The competition thinks it's normal, the [Spanish Football] Federation does too and the opponents encourage it.

I'm so sorry. The championship that once belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano [Ronaldo] and [Lionel] Messi today belongs to racists.

A beautiful nation, which welcomed me and which I love, but which agreed to export the image of a racist country to the world.

"I'm sorry for the Spaniards who don't agree, but today, in Brazil, Spain is known as a country of racists. And unfortunately, for everything that happens each week, I have no defense. I agree. But I am strong and I will go to the end against racists. Even if far from here."

Ancelotti spoke to Movistar TV after the game, explaining he felt what happened to his player was "more important" than the result. Real Madrid fell to third behind Atletico Madrid before kick-off, and stayed there thanks to Diego Lopez's winner for Valencia.

Stampede Erupts In El Salvador League Match. 12 Dead, 500 Injured

At least 12 football fans have reportedly died and around 500 more injured after a stampede of supporters unfolded at a match in El Salvador.

The Monumental stadium in Cuscatlan, about 25 miles northeast of capital San Salvador, was hosting a quarter-final clash between domestic clubs Alianza and FAS. However, the venue's capacity of 44,836 is understood to have been exceeded after hopeful spectators forced their way through an access gate.

The resulting flood of fans saw play suspended just 16 minutes into the match as chaos unfolded on-field. Horrific images from the match showed bodies strewn in tunnels and gangways as medics saw to those injured in the crush.

"It was an avalanche of fans who overran the gate," commented Pedro Hernandez, president of El Salvadoran football's first division. "Some were still under the metal in the tunnel. Others managed to make it to the stands and then to the field and were smothered."

Footage of the incident in Cuscatlan showed the moment fans recognise the seriousness of the crush as it unfolded. Some supporters could be seen fighting to free others from beyond the metal barriers inside a tunnel.

Mauricio Arriaza, director of the National Civil Police, said nine fans died at the hospital, with three more deaths confirmed from different hospitals. "Salvadoran soccer is in mourning," he added.

Reports suggested officials were concerned about fake tickets to the match being sold, with an investigation into the matter already believed to be underway.

Others pictures showed emergency services rushing outside the stadium, scything through a sea of disorientated spectators in states of shock.

The Salvadoran Soccer Federation voiced sympathy for the families of those affected by the tragedy. Local police has said a criminal investigation will take place.

Carlos Fuentes, spokesman for the Rescue Commandos confirmed 'seven men and two women' were among the nine initially believed dead, though that number has since grown.

The President's brother, Yamil, leads El Salvador's national institute of sports and was reported saying a meeting had been called for Sunday to review the tragedy.

FG To Begin Home Delivery Of Passports Soon – Aregbesola

The Federal Government has promised to conclude negotiations with NIPOST on the usage of its speedy mail service to start delivering passports to Nigerians who opt for such a service.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, disclosed this while speaking at the opening of the Nigeria Immigration Service Passport Front Desk Office in Auchi, Edo State, on Saturday, 20th May 2023.
“We are in the final stage of concluding negotiations with NIPOST to begin using its speed mail service to deliver passports to Nigerians wherever they are in the world after production,” the Minister disclosed.

According to a statement by Sola Fasure, Media Adviser to the Minister, the launch of an additional Passport Front Office in Auchi, Edo State, was part of the government’s effort towards effective service delivery to Nigerians.

He quoted Aregbesola as saying it was the intention of the government to provide the passport to anyone desirous of it within a reasonable time, at an affordable price and without any stress.

Aregbesola, while stating that Edo State has one of the highest passport applications in Nigeria, revealed that the waiting period between application and collection would likely increase due to the recent increase in demand.

In his words: “Our current working schedule is that fresh application would take six weeks after biometric data registration and three weeks for renewal. This is reasonable, competitive and in line the global best practices.

“The challenge, however, is the waiting period at the point of application and data registration.
“All applicants will be put in a queue, depending on the centre of their choice, to determine the registration date. Regrettably, it might take two months in some highly competitive centres where the application is very high. We have no control over this.”

He however said that the Federal Government is intentional about opening more front desk offices, in order to increase the registration centres and reduce the waiting period before biometric data capture.

This year alone, the Minister of Interior had been in Daura in Katsina State, Alimosho in Lagos, Ilesa in Osun, Zaria in Kaduna and Oyo in Oyo State to commission Passport Front Desk Offices.

Speaking earlier, the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Isah Jere Idris, said that the choice of Auchi is apt, as Edo State ranks fifth amongst states with the highest volume of passport applications locally.

According to him, “In the past 365 days, Edo state has processed 56,291 applications out of the 1.5 million passports produced in Nigeria. The commissioning of this front office will no doubt go a long way in reducing the traffic in Edo State and other neighbouring States.”
